| 448771 | 2006-04-23 10:07:00 | :help: Hi My brother inlaw asked me over to fix his computer as avg would not update.. It is a compaq presario with xp. Running Avg but nothing else except his xp firewall and that is only running because it is not seen. As everytime I put protection in for him he takes it out. Last time I put spybot in today it is no longer there. Another time I put win patrol in and he took it out said he could not understand it. :annoyed: He is also on dialup, so it took me from 10am this morning till 7.30pm today and did not accomplish anything except a headache. I am going back Tueday. Does anyone have any thing else I can try. Or has someone had the same and fixed it. Any suggestions would be a big help. Below is what I did. I am sorry If it is long but I did not want to leave anything out. I went and got the updates because the avg in the taskbar was grey. It downloaded them, said it had them ready and installed I clicked ok but the avg icon was still grey. I restarted the puter, when the puter first starts the icon is in the tray it is normal colour until everything finishes uploading then it changed back to grey. Brought avg up and it said updates were out of date. I then took avg out using the add remove. also took the folder out of program folders.reinstalled it using the latest net guide disc. went back on the net got the updates again same thing happened. So I done a virus check and it said he had the JavaByteVerify virus. So I went to symantec found out how to remove it. I followed what it said. Turned off system restore then deleted the files it told me were infected in safe mode. Restarted the computer went and got new updates again. same thing happened updates dowloaded I clicked ok when said they were installed but the same thing happened (nothing) it was still grey. So I done a scan at housecall. It found more of the same virus plus two more virus that avg did not pick up and about 16 adaware or more . I told it to remove them all which it did. Nothing changed when I installed new updated I then uninstalled avg again reinstalled it as I thought it may have got corrupt . Went and got the updates for the 5th time. same thing it updated them I clicked ok but the icon is still grey. By this time I felt like doing this :badpc: So I gave up as by this time I had a headache and I came home. :help: :help: |

He rebooted and the Avg is its proper colour. Once again thankyou you saved me a lot of hassle as I would never have thought to look there. I will always check in future. As there will be a next time with him. But THANKS   |
