448696 2006-04-23 04:30:00 Hi all. Not PC-related, but there's a lot of geniuses here, so I'm sure someone will be able to help

I've just bought a Sony HDD Recorder ( is "love" too strong a word??), and I've also got an older (Mitsubishi) Black Diamond VCR/DVD combo, maybe 2-3 years old?

When I dub a DVD from the Sony, and try and watch it in the Mitsi, I keep getting "Bad Disc" messages.

I'm using a Sony RW disc, and the Mitsi DVD Player has "RW" beside the tray so I assume it should be able to read it.

Any help with this would be much appreciated - this ability was conditional for purchase!!

Cheers
Tim

PS: Yes, the DVD player does work, tried it before posting!

448697 2006-04-23 04:34:00 Have you tried a + or -R blank to see if it works?

NOT a RW?

The RW on the Mitsi maybe talking about CDRW not DVD-RW?

448698 2006-04-23 04:40:00 Ahhh....looking closer it says CD-R/RW...

But it's a DVD player. Why does it matter if the DVD is a R or RW?

If I dub to an R, does that mean it can't be over-written again??

Thanks
Tim

448699 2006-04-23 04:50:00 But it's a DVD player. Why does it matter if the DVD is a R or RW?

Depends if the Mitsi can play it, and whether the Sony finalises DVD-RW's after it burns whatever to it.

Not all DVD players will play DVD-RW's unless it has been finalised. (the burner closes the DVD), So, nothing else can be written to it.

If I dub to an R, does that mean it can't be over-written again??

Correct. You can only write to it once. And cant erase it / write anything else to it.

Yep, that’s correct.

448701 2006-04-23 05:20:00 Thanks guys. "finalising" is part of the process, according to the Sony handbook.

I'll try it again with different types of discs.

448702 2006-04-23 05:53:00 since your Mitsubishi player is 2-3 years old.. might be like my dvd player
very very picky at which media you put in
obviously the pressed ones always work
dvd-/+rw never worked for me
and only certain dvd-r works

last time i used some princo ones and those worked fine
but probably different for your player
so you might have to try a few

448703 2006-04-27 00:26:00 As far as I was aware you couldn't dub from DVD players to recorders due to CSS (Content Scrambling System) protection, or to VHS due to Macrovision protection. Of course, any DVDs you've created yourself can probably be copied this way.

There are a vast number of programs for the PC which will remove CSS & Macrovision protection, but they can't be mentioned on this forum ;)
