448650 2006-04-23 02:54:00 First post :nerd: I have a number (over a dozen) patchs of one sort of other that have been added to keep MS window up-to-date. I was wondering can I delete some of these that are several years old? I figure that new patches have changed or made the eailer patches of no use. Am I ok to delete the oldest ones?

The reason for this thinking was just doing some general cleanup and free up disk space and keep the OS from gettings so bloated.

448651 2006-04-23 03:17:00 Yes you can remove all those old patches as they have all been addressed in all the updates..

If you have SP2 and are happy to keep it you can claim back about 400mb from backup files that where made when you installed SP2.

Remove this file..C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$.

This will leave the SP2 entry in Add/Remove.Just click on 'Remove'.It will tell you the file has been deleted and will then tell you it will remove the entry.....You now have about 400mb more space.

448653 2006-04-23 04:08:00 Eddy..aka Pancake....

I thought WGA required all the old patches to remain for the certification and product identification to allow new updates......might be wrong here, but I haven't taken a single one out yet...and a buddy did and cannot get WGA to allow any but the hotfixes and critical updates.

448654 2006-04-23 04:57:00 I am going to disagree with Pancake / Eddy here (as he is wrong)

Nope, as soon as you remove/delete a patch that undoes every thing & makes your computer not as secure as it was.

Hope this helps :)

448655 2006-04-23 05:24:00 Unless I was taught wrong then as far as I know patches are replaced by updates...If I am wrong then I stand corrected. Pancake (6359)

Aren’t updates the same as patches???
