448591 2006-04-22 21:37:00 When I try to install the latest version of portage on the gentoo box, it says: !!! ARCH is not set... Are you missing the /etc/make.profile symlink?
!!! Is the symlink correct? Is your portage tree complete?

The symlink points to: /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/2.4

I'm preparing to update the kernel to 2.6

448592 2006-04-22 22:09:00 Still half asleep - I forgot to check if the directory actually exists
I've created the directory & moved the default profile into it. I assume when I update to kernel 2.6, it will create a new directory for that.

448593 2006-04-22 22:20:00 Try this

Link a profile to /etc/make.profile. Do this by typing the command "ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/$VERSION/ /etc/make.profile" , where $VERSION equals your version of gentoo. (2004.3, 2005.1, etc) If the "/usr...../$VERSION/" directory does not exist, you do not have a full portage tree
