448434 2006-04-22 05:52:00 I have just been given a computer with XP home as the operating system.
When I try to open certain files.... those ending in .pps etc won't open. A message comes up on the desk top saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel". I do have the appropriate programs installed...ie Power Point Viewer for .pps. If you can help me please keep it simple, I'm not wizz kid. Thanks

448435 2006-04-22 05:57:00 Is Office / powerpoint installed?? If not, thats why you cant open the file.

You can use this (www.microsoft.com)

BUT, you wont be able to edit the pps file. Only view whats in it.

I think you have to open it manually with the viewer?? Run the viewer then open the pps file.

448436 2006-04-22 06:16:00 Yes, as I had mentioned I do have Power Point viewer correctly installed. Cheers. lin.scott (9797)
448437 2006-04-22 06:24:00 You could try and see if it this works .

Open my computer / tools / folder options / file types .

Highlight the PPS extension then click on change, then browse, then find the PP viewer file, (the installed exe file), then select it so it hopefully opens PPS files .

448438 2006-04-23 01:45:00 Can't you just right click one of those files, select "Open With", and cloose the PP viewer? If yoiu tick the "always use" box, that should do the clever stuff. ;) Graham L (2)

Speedy and Graham . . . I don't get it . . .

If PP is installed, why doesn't it auto-associate for opening those extensions? I smell a corrupted install of Power Point . . . or like I have said before, ALL the Windows Office Suite has a propensity to let the wheels fall off . . . . I attribute that to the Updates and Hotfixes . Errors like "Windows Office could not fire the virtual basic environment and needs to close now" are all I get with Windows Office .

I find that if I use OpenOffice, it will let me do what I want to (including editing) any of the W/Office generated stuff . . . right?

Having Corel's Word Perfect, I always have a backup for those times that I cannot open something graphic- or text-wise from Windows Office . . . but I haven't had to resort to Corel yet . . . . . .

448440 2006-04-23 02:37:00 You obviously got a much broader problem with the whole office suite.
I would reinstall it.

Cheers

OH . . . . . . . . . . . . . . how I wish it were that simple!

I have burned the whole system down, installed and re-installed and repaired and it still falls apart after the next update/upgrade from M$ .

It got so bad, I just abandoned it all together and opted for OO or Corel's .

Life is much easier .

I guess it's a divine mystery . . . like the fact that I cannot use the Alt+xxxx keys whilst I am on F1 .

448442 2006-04-23 03:38:00 Speedy and Graham . . . I don't get it . . .

If PP viewer is the only thing installed, and NOT Powerpoint (part of Office itself) . There's a diff .

One should associate itself with PPS files, and will let u view and edit .

The other (the viewer), is a standalone program, may not let u associate PPS files with it . Which is why u may have to run the viewer, then open whatever PPS file, to open it .

And why it comes up with the dialog box, asking you to associate the PPS file with a program . PP viewer IS NOT part of Office . Its by itself .

448443 2006-04-23 03:55:00 I normally don't install the whole Office suite . . but I do have it . . . Win 2000 Office, and it includes Access, PowerPoint, Front Page, Word, Excel and Outlook .

I always thought they were part of the whole package . That would be the only way I'd get them . . . I never bought any of them seperately; although, even that was a waste of money as I see it now with the freebees out there that perform as well or better than the Windows stuff .

. . . and without that stupid paperclip either!
