Hey Lawrence...
I tried that number about 8pm ish -
I thought that it was ok, but then remembered to clear out my cache and then retest.
With the new number - it appeared to be worse or just as bad... hard to tell.
I test the same pages... stuff, orcon's site and google news.
Sucks!!!
I rang Orcon a tad too late... support closes by 8pm.
At least I can say that I tried their alternative number.

I'll call tomorrow - but I'm not holding my breath.
Hope the new number works out for you... changing ISPs is a pain in the...

448800 2006-04-26 11:44:00 Everything went well until 7.30, then it hit the wall, Both lines are about the same now.
There is alot of talk about Broadband speed and look's like a Telecom problem can be seen here tinyurl.com

Thing is I can use borrowed Xtra dail up without much problem.
Do non-Telecom ISPs just get a second rate service?

Should broadband have any impact on dail up? Maybe it is the ATMs or whatever? Dunno. ADSL sends data in a completely diff way to dail up... so who knows.

With all the Broadband complaints at the moment...
Kind of gets you thinking about the quality of service.
Surely if the service fails to be delivered then users shoukd be credited for:
A. Down time.
B. Poor speed over a period of time.

ISPs should quailty assure their service and email us with statements like:
Sorry our service sucked today - Would you like a $5.00 credit or a free pizza?

Grrr

i totally agree, when the "upgrade" was made to 3.5mbit i was cut to 64kbps for 3 days for no reason. i didnt change my 2mbit account so i dont know why it happened. a while ago the ihug service failed in west auckland with a very vaugue explanation form ihug blaming telecom. i'm sure were i a business owner i would be very angry at lost earnings as a result of no internet access

and yes, non-telecom ips to get a second rate service. its sad but true.
my friend at work has mate who works in the telecomunications industry (not for telecom) and apparently the non-telecom isps are given (pay for) a certain bandwith for themselves which they dish out to their customers. xtra does not have this retriction.

i also very much suspect xtra customers are given priority over others when the telecom technicians are out fixing stuff

448803 2006-04-28 03:00:00 Tried DNS changes by Orcon help desk... no joy.
Apparently a lack of Network capacity between the shared IPNET
Network and the Telecom NGN (Next Generation Network) is the issue.
All ISPs bar Xtra are experience slowdown during peak periods.
Xtra have their own dedicated IPNET platform instead of the shared platform - so life is good for them.

My problem has been months in the baking so I'm convinced entirely.
:waughh:

My call to the help desk... ended with a sorry.
I guess I shouldn't hold my breath.

So why would you not use Xtra based on the above info?

448805 2006-04-28 10:17:00 is that what orcon the help desk said?
They didn't suggest I go with Xtra . . . but the rest was pretty much from them .
I guess at under $15 a month you can't ask for much .
I'll give them a few days to come back with something . . . but the impression from the tone of the Help Desk guys voice was that I shouldn't be too hopeful .

They offered me a months credit - but that is hardly going to keep me with them .

It would be interesting to know how many users are with Xtra compared to all the other dail up and other internet users . Based on the numbers and all those ISPs sharing . . . is there a good choice besides Xtra?
Maybe at very least - The Govt should Split the company up into wholesaler and ISP .
Make Xtra compete on a level playing field .

Dunno . . . too much I don't know to make an intelligent comment on .
Now if someone could run some fiber to my door . . . I'd pay for the 15m from the letter box to the house .

448806 2006-04-29 21:23:00 I got the same from Orcon, Sound's like all of the ISP's besides xtra are in the same boat.
I guess you have to think of Telecom as Communist, just drip feeding the peasants little bit's of technology when it looks like might get there hand smacked, Looks like Telecom and what is going on at the moment makes me think their infrastructure can't handle the pressure , I would say change is a must.

448807 2006-04-30 01:17:00 No, I think of them as an elitist organisation full of stuck up little nobodies putting on a bogus front of bonhomie whilst pursuing extreme right wing business practises, that is my impression over the years, how's that? zqwerty (97)
