448671 2006-04-23 02:33:00 Friends,
i am contemplating buying a external hard drive to backup the disk of my laptop as well as my desktop. This is why I want it external, otherwise I would go for internal and mirror it.
My question is, looking at the price differences between the Maxtor common external HDD and their co-called 'One Touch' Hard Disks whether it would pay to buy the One Touch, especially since I want to backup two computers on it. Does that work at all, backing up 2 computers on one HDD and if, would you recommend mirroring software (Ghost??) or just go for a plain one touch complete 1:1 backup? Since backup is essential to me I am happy to pay for good software.

Cheers

448672 2006-04-23 02:37:00 ..Got a friend who backs-up three desktop 'puters with one external 200g HDD and he has no troubles with it at all. It monitors and saves everything and it doesn't matter what 'puter it is backing up....it just KNOWS how to do it.

So, I know it works...but please, don't ask me how...I am amazed by it too. All I know is that he has a router for them all to talk to/through. It's just a matter of addresses or computer names or color of your eyes, I think... :waughh:

448673 2006-04-23 04:50:00 I like to make a Ghost image (or you can use TrueImage) of my system with all the updates, basic apps etc installed (drivers installed etc). This is only because it saves you a whole lot of time if your hard drive did die (Windows XP can take ages to install and to get all those settings and apps backup takes a while too). As you can see, while this is nice it isn't really required. Burn the image to a couple of DVDs and leave a copy on the external hard drive (if you have the space).

Then I would backup documents, email, pictures, vids (but maybe not whole game installs) to the external drive. Many options here such as Nero, MS Synchtoy and Syncback. To say $$$, I'd just buy a USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure and throw in a big hard drive. All the fancy one-button thing does is launch some software.

Maxtor isn't my favourite brand of hard drive due to failure rate - I'd go for Seagate or Samsung myself..

448677 2006-04-24 04:05:00 Used Ghost in the past but they are funny with SATA HDD config don't know why-couldn't load image once and had to reinstall everything

a very good understated program is ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE won't have any probs with SATA HDD.

Am using a seagate external 2.0USB for work v fast and easy to use just really a matter of plug and play
