1401719 2015-06-01 03:25:00 A while ago (have looked here Googled there I even thought I had it saved some where for when I needed it) there was post on hiding files and making them only visible by using a password I think it was some sort of program but not sure.
Yes there are some I found on Google but none sounded like the one that was recommended here.
Am getting old (and going in for another Stent or two next week) and would like to put some files away which are of no use to any one but me. How ever it was done it did not show up any where except for when you put the password in (where I don't know).
I would like to put them off my laptop and on to my WD Passport drive.
Cheers and thanks in advance

Although why hide them? Sounds suspicious....

And putting them on the back up drive - you always keep them on 2 different drives for backup reasons. Hard drives die, external or internal. So if you want to keep them safe, they should be on both drives.

1401721 2015-06-01 04:39:00 No that's not what was posted but thanks any way.
"Sounds suspicious"
There was Mum Dad my Brother and Me I have two kids who could not care less. I have hatch match dispatch copy's and no Mum no Dad and my brother died last year I would like to have them for personal reasons but to not be there as they are only of concern to me so if that is "suspicious" then may be one of the moderators of this forum can delete this thread as I can do with out the accusations and **** it may cause.
Thanking you all.
Goodbye

1401722 2015-06-01 04:45:00 Hiding them wont really mean a lot. Anyone with a bit of knowledge if they were looking for something would look for hidden files, which would then show them.

if you want to password protect files, I use www.aescrypt.com You download the program, double click on the AESCrypt file to install. To password /Encrypt the file right click it, ---- Follow instructions on that page. Enter a password you want to use. It then creates another file but encrypted, as it says on the site
Note that when you encrypt a file with AES Crypt, it does not delete the original file. Generally, people encrypt files for the purpose of sending a file securely via e-mail or copying it to a portable storage device that is more susceptible to loss. So you then delete the original file if you wanted to be sure. When you try to open the encrypted file you'll be prompted for the password, No password - No going any further.

DONT forget the password, its encrypted with 256Bit encryption which would be almost impossible to crack at the current time.

1401723 2015-06-01 05:02:00 Not hidden but you could compress them into a zip file then add that into a second password protected zip file. The reason for the double compression is to hide the file names which can still be seen inside a zip file. You could just give them bogus names instead.
7 Zip can do it http://www.7-zip.org/ and if you use it's own 7z format it's pretty secure - apparently the zip format is fairly easy to crack. Why you choose to hide this stuff is entirely your business but it sounds like the kind of records that someone might want one day.

Hidden files are only hidden from casual users, most people who post here could easily figure out how to unhide them. You could hide the zip files easy enough if you wanted to though, just a matter of setting the file attribute to hidden and turning off hidden files in windows explorer's view options.

1401724 2015-06-01 05:02:00 Thanks for that the Lawyer has copy's of every thing with instruction to destroy on my death so will just reinstall windows which should clean the drive. Just a pain if I need some thing having to go get from them but it will be gone so mission accomplished.
Why would I need some thing ??
I don't have a passport and I believe that you need more than just your word for things like that. The tax doc's ect can be obtained from relative places.
Stupid question ---- should not have even asked. Live and learn
Cheers

1401726 2015-06-01 08:49:00 Try www.cleanersoft.com

Its not foolproof but should hide files from casual prying eyes. I have had some issues with imperfect hiding with 8.1, but as yet haven't tried to sort out what is going on. Worked fine with xp.
