| 1401667 | 2015-05-31 00:43:00 | I have a problem with the above laptop . Am helping a friend who has a problem connecting to her wi-fi . I tried rebooting her modem, but still nothing I ended up bringing it home and I managed to get it connected via ethernet to my network, and discovered about 3,000 pups and various malware on it . Cleaned it out with Malwarebytes, Adware cleaner and scanned with Eset online scan . Downloaded Ccleaner and cleared it out . IE was screwed somehow and would not work (outdated version) so uninstalled then downloaded latest . All good, I had it working fine, connecting with both cable and Wi Fi . Took it back to her place, still would not connect to her network either way! All lights showing on Slingshot Netcomm modem . Rang Slingshot, they said all good at their end with Internet and Broadband . Huh? I wonder what to try next, because it works fine on mine and even works on my smartphone with tethering . Is it possible that the malware has somehow upset her network settings, and how would I know? She has no idea what her wifi password is and it doesn't appear to be on the bottom of the modem . Any ideas much appreciated, cheers LL |

| 1401668 | 2015-05-31 00:58:00 | Try removing the existing network on the laptop, something may be screwed up causing a problem. You haven't said what OS is on it, but this is for W7 & 8.1. Go into the control Panel, Network and Sharing Center -- Top Left - Manage Wireless networks -- Select the current network, delete it. BUT before doing so, right click the network /Properties/Security --Look to see if the password is showing, sometimes there's a option to show characters. Once you have the password (or not) delete the network. reboot, and try to log back onto it. IF you dont have the password, then you'll have to connect to the Router Via Ethernet, log into the router and look to see what the password is. |

| 1401669 | 2015-05-31 01:37:00 | Thanks WT, it has Windows 7 Professional on it. Such a nuisance, I couldn't get onto her network with my ipad when I was there, because didn't know the password! I won't be seeing her till tomorrow as they're having visitors today. But will post back when or if I have fixed it. Cheers, LL |

| 1401670 | 2015-05-31 01:51:00 | Reset it then reconfigure it Run adwcleaner on it too (toolslib.net). Whatever it picks up, get it to delete them, then reboot |

| 1401672 | 2015-05-31 02:18:00 | Reset the modem if noone knows the password. But as WT said log into it and see what the password is. If you can If the network doesnt work at her place, does the internet work? |

| 1401673 | 2015-05-31 02:25:00 | Nope, As I said, all lights showing green on modem, cannot connect to the network, so therefore no internet. Just hope password shows under Manage Wireless Networks/Security. It shows mine ok. Cheers, LL |

| 1401674 | 2015-05-31 02:28:00 | I would try another filter. See if that fixes it. I was going to say something may have added a proxy in the browser. This will stop it from going online too. But if noone can get online, I dont think this would be the cause |

Adwcleaner Junkware removal tool Malwarebytes Hitmanpro All came up clean, yay! Cross fingers and toes for tomorrow when I take it back . Then will try getting on the net with it according to WT's instructions and yours about the network . Cheers, LL |

Cheers, LL Walk through --- Connect the laptop ( or any other Laptop) to the Router Via Ethernet. See if you have internet access, if you do then open a Command prompt (CMD) type in IPCONFIG press enter -- look for the gateway address, type that into a browser (hint use IE- As some times I've found other browsers dont always work) Type in http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ( with X being the gateway address) you should get a login box, user name = admin password, if its the default is either admin or password ( could even be blank - no password -- cant remember off the top of my head with those routers) If its refusing then reset the Router, theres a small hole that you poke something like a paperclip or something that will fit in the hole. If you reset you may have to manually reenter slignshots details or it may auto detect after a few minutes. IF resetting once its finished log back into the router Via Ethernet and repeat above to find the Password, or change to suit. |
