1401138 2015-05-22 01:12:00 Look in device manager see if any drivers are missing. Altho depending on what the sd card is, (if it's SDHC) and if the reader doesnt support SDHC, it wont read it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1401139 2015-05-22 01:23:00 You could also check disk management (right click the start button easiest way) and see if it shows up in case it's an incompatible format (or unformatted).
By default they should show up though as they are usually either FAT/ FAT32/ exFAT all of which windows 8.1 can deal with.

It should, if there's anything on it that Windows can read and there are no issues preventing it from working..

Various problems could include:
Broken card or adapter if using one, broken reader, driver not installed, card incompatible (higher capacity than the reader can read), card unformatted, card filesystem corrupt, filesystem not Windows compatible or something wrong with Windows itself like corrupted system files.

Win 8.1

Does it do this with just one card or all cards?

If this is the case uninstall card reader driver and reboot laptop to install driver again
