1401090 2015-05-21 01:09:00 My flatmate set up a small server in our home.
There are two external hard-drives attached to this server. Now, for some reason, I cannot access them.

One ext hd has only one folder in it, which I cannot open.
On the other, I can open most all of the folders, except one.

My flatmate has already given everyone in the household full permission to view/copy to/read/etc the server, and cannot determine the problem, either on my computer or on the server computer.

X:\Foldername is not accessible.

Access is denied.

Why so? We cannot figure out what the problem is.

1401091 2015-05-21 01:41:00 What is the OS being used as a "Server" ? Some simply use a regular Operating system and call it a server, then theres real Sever OS's ????

Most of the time its a two step sharing Process.

On the Ext HDD, has he shared the whole Drive, or just the folder ?

Make sure you are on the same workgroup as well, as this can cause all sorts of problems, and what OS are you using ?

Whole drive. I can open the drives and sign-in to them fine, just not open those two folders.
He says I'm in the same workgroup.

Windows 7 Home user. He installed Windows Server Connection.

Windows 7 Home user . He installed Windows Server Connection .

??
dont think so with Win Home & Server 2012
Windows Home cannot, by design, connect to a MS Server domain .
You can connect to & map shares . . . . but . . . . .
there are some bugs you have to deal with with Win & share access if not logged into the domain .

But
it really just sounds like share level access & folder permissions arnt BOTH setup correctly .

Also, make both USB drives assigned to definite Drive letters up at the other end of the alphabet, ie make one USB S: & the other T: . Just to eliminate issues of USB drives getting assigned different drive letters as time goes on & they get unlpugged & reconnected .

1401095 2015-05-21 03:55:00 Are you logging into your computer with a username & password that is setup on the server? CYaBro (73)
1401096 2015-05-21 05:02:00 I can access the hard drives. I just cannot access certain folders within the drives.

If you can access some folders but not others, it will usually be an issue of share & permission access not setup correctly on the server .

or, worst case senario
sometimes, with Win home, Ive had to use a 'net use' batch file ,set to run on startup, to get access to work .
WinVista,7,8 sometimes has a nasty bug were locally saved share passwords dont work on restart .

Yes, although if I remember correctly, my flatmate finds that curious as he doesn't think it is supposed to still require one.
He's bringing over a friend to look at the issue later today to see if it is related to the new router (it has given us a couple other problems, too).

1401098 2015-05-21 05:27:00 Servers usually require a user to log in, that's the whole idea of the Server Security.

Essentials can run / work within a Workgroup, BUT its designed by default to use a Domain, to get it working within a Workgroup you have to trick it / Set it up when installing the OS. Once its installed you cant change it. I have Server Essentials 2012 Working in a workgroup, but required a bit if fiddling and two reinstalls to get it working right.
