1401016	2015-05-19 09:26:00	Hp pavilion 15-p011tx less than 6 months old the hdd has just crapped out on me . Originally it was saying hard drive short dst check failed and now on the boot screen it's saying the smart check is failed (same as other thread?) and hdd failure is imminent . I can no longer boot it up to back up my data on it . HP have said to drop it in as it's under warranty . My question is, without paying $750 for a shop to do it, how can I back it up myself? Have been told I need a 2 . 5" external hdd to transfer it . Does anyone in the Auckland region have one I can borrow? Also will taking the hdd out void the warranty before returning it to hp?	--Wolf-- (128)
1401017	2015-05-19 09:45:00	What you can try is boot the laptop from a bootable CD, something like Linux (ubuntu), with a USB External HDD / Storage device connected, as long as the drives not completely failed, you may be able to copy/paste your data between the two. If it has failed totally then it would need to be sent away to a real data recovery company to recover, then it may cost the $750+ quoted. BUT a word of caution: if the drives failing, the more its run , even trying to copy data, there's more chance of it failing more and losing everything. If the data is important dont piss around with the drive. If you need a real data recovery company, try www.payam.co.nz As for the warranty -- Generally if a data recovery company has to work on the HDD, depending on whats needed the warranty will be voided esp if they have to disassemble the drive. 1401018	2015-05-19 09:51:00	Thanks for the reply . I have a desktop external hdd would that work? Though I don't have a Linux cd . So basically the only way to not void the warranty is to hope it hasn't completely failed and I can follow the first method? I do have a back up although it is a couple months old so just wanted to get the most recent data if possible .	--Wolf-- (128)
1401019	2015-05-19 10:53:00	Any external HDD that connects Via USB will be fine . Just removing the HDD from the laptop generally wont Void a Warranty . Theres a good chance by removing then attaching the HDD Via a USB cradle to a good PC wont work either as the working OS may not be able to read the failing Drive, where as a Bootable Linux CD can . Had to recover a few customers Data by using Linux, when windows fails . Another way is if the Laptop Drive is removed and attached Via USB, there is some free data recovery software about, BUT they are not always successful . If the drive has to be sent to a data recovery company and they have to disassemble the drive the warranty WILL be voided . In the past I have also used a Program called GetDataBack . I just seen they have a bootable CD thats free . 1401020	2015-05-19 21:39:00	That bootable CD looks promising. As my old spare laptop does not have a working disc drive, is it possible to burn it to a USB stick instead? Or if not, where can I get a pre-made CD of it / Linux?	--Wolf-- (128)

1401022	2015-05-19 21:54:00	yes you can I usually use Puppy Linux for this as its small, fits on a 1Gb flash drive and works very fast. Download is usually around 800Mb for Puppy.	gary67 (56)
1401023	2015-05-19 22:08:00	Ok I burnt the GetDataBack onto a usb using Rufus and am now trying to boot from it. I can select it in the start up menu but it is only coming up as "file explorer" with <KNOPPIX> and <boot> and can't seem to get it to actually boot	--Wolf-- (128)
1401024	2015-05-19 23:12:00	Alright had to enable legacy in the boot to get it to read it. GetDataBack would not boot all the way through, just went to a blank screen after the initial window. Linux Puppy booted fine but in the bottom left corner didn't not show my laptops hardrive (only the mounted USB) Does this mean the HDD is too far gone?	--Wolf-- (128)

You can ruin the platters by trying to get it to work when if is an issue with the heads First decide if the data is important enough to spend $600+ on data recovery: if so take it to a specialist, not some PC repair shop If you dont want to spend $$ on it... Any clicking noises,or sounds like its trying to spin up & failing. if so its game over. Is it still recognised in the bios ? If the bios wont detect it, then you cant recover data . Dont try & use a laptop for data recovery, this should be done on a PC. Connect the drive to a PC,as a secondary drive, does the PC's bios detect it ? If so , then does win detect it (disk management). If not , use a linux based data recover, as Lin is less fussy than Win with bad HD's Sometimes a SATA to USB adapter works better than direct connect via SATA (usually not though) Freezing almost never actually works . Sometimes a good thump on the table will get it going (seen it ), but that is a LAST RESORT & dont do it when powered up. It will only help with certain faults, & usually doesnt help & can make things worse.	1101 (13337)
