1389879 2014-12-10 21:14:00 " pays $400 a week rent "

Thats the problem.
NZ (AK ) has become somewhere thats too expense to live , especially for those on min wage.

No magic fix unfortunately , current welfare system (incl income topups, health & super) is unsustainable.
I have a friend who gets the 'working for families' handout. He uses it to pay for trips to Aus . So welfare money wasted on those who dont
REALLY need it . A welfare system thats just too big to keep under control.

1389880 2014-12-10 21:16:00 Finding the fix is the problem.

You’ll find some of these people are just bludgers and will always be.

Some are just useless at budgeting.

Few, are genuinely living in poverty, indeed a diet wouldn’t go amiss in a number of cases. ;)

I don’t have a “Silver Bullet” but I believe W&I will just have to stop providing Cash to these people and provide Food Vouchers, Power Vouchers, Rent Vouchers and the like to those who can’t or won’t budget. Either that or appoint a Budget Advisor to sort things out and handle their money.

I’ll bet in most cases you’d find multiple mobile phones in these households, a lot of which are top of the range. Then there is the cost of running them. Priorities to some of these people would see the Mobile topped up before food was purchased.

Ignoring the problem won’t fix it so something needs to be done. :groan:

I've seen that line of people several times a day over the last week when dojng deliveries into the city and been surprised that there were so many people queing for food handouts this early in December.

1389882 2014-12-10 22:13:00 Christmas? Bah humbug.

"At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,"
said the gentleman, taking up a pen, "it is more than
usually desirable that we should make some slight
provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer
greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in
want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands
are in want of common comforts, sir."

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down
the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?" demanded Scrooge.
"Are they still in operation?"

"They are. Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish
I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour,
then?" said Scrooge.

"Both very busy, sir."

"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first,
that something had occurred to stop them in their
useful course," said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to
hear it."

Which is why they need a minder. They obviously have no idea when it comes to budgeting. Breeding is different. ;)

1389886 2014-12-11 00:53:00 If anyone gives anything away for free there is never a shortage of people reaady to take advantage of them. The guy in that picture does not look as though he has been short of food for a very long time.
I fail to see how anyone can attach blame to the Government because any individual produces children that they cannot afford to support.
This is the season to pimp the poor and for charities to stick there hands out for cash.
These stories have been the same every year that I can remember (it makes absolutely no difference which party is in power) and my memory now covers a long period. I do not expect that to change anytime soon.
While I am fully supportive of the need to help those in need I have no time at all for anyone who thinks they should have a free ride at the expense of others.

1389887 2014-12-11 01:09:00 This doesn't help either: Trudy Tapu, 25, has three children aged 9, 8 and 6, with a fourth due in July
Sure, accidents happen, but really?
