1389491 2014-12-06 23:44:00 the fares would be so high that no one could afford to use it..

So where do you think the finance comes from to bridge the gap between break even and operating cost? Apart from the taxpayer, i.e.

1389492 2014-12-06 23:56:00 Just been reading on Stuff -- one accident on the motorway and traffic comes to a stop / crawl for hours & hours. :groan:

I remember a crash in the Ngaruanga Gorge a few years back. When I couldn't back out of my garage to use Stewart Dr, Newlands - in either direction - because the traffic was at a standstill from 0730 to past 1300. The only other way into Wellington was via Broderick road and through Ngaio, but that also was at a standstill also because of a crash. And one still had to get around the parking lot outside my front gate.

At least Auckland has many alternative routes, and the worst I ever recall was when the police helicopter crashed into Spaghetti Junction. Took me 90 minutes from Albany to St Heliers.

Many? From the SHore - Harbour Bridge or via Albany/Waitakere.

That 1 alternative.

1389494 2014-12-07 04:46:00 Hopefully there will be a proper referendum on the issue.

How on earth thinking people can imagine Wairarapa could be part of a Wellington 'super city' beggars belief.

People in Upper and Lower Hutt have made plain their opposition, though there are those 'habitual letter writers' who keep plugging the idea.

The main drive for amalgamation seems to come from some 'power mad' Wellingtonians, who view the rest of the region as a cash cow for Wellington's profligate spending :)

Spot on there Terr.

1389495 2014-12-07 05:19:00 I hate to be the bearer of bad news but rail transport is surging overseas. It's only the NZ Gov Luddites that think that cards and trunks are a better alternative.. Plus I don't think that there is any public transport anywhere in the world that runs at a profit. It it was to the fares would be so high that no one could afford to use it..

1389496 2014-12-07 05:37:00 You Aucklanders don't know what heavy traffic is!! I got caught in slow traffic on the Napier/Hastings Expressway. Gosh the traffic crawls on it in the morning rush hour. Took me all of 12 minutes to travel the 15K to my destination last Friday. I am in agreement with some folk who are asking that the road be made into a double lane. We have it real tough down here. C'mon Napier/Hastings members, tell us about your epic trips between the two cities!

1389498 2014-12-08 06:02:00 You would have thought amalgamating the different councils in Auckers would make it more efficient and rates would drop across the board. But no along came commie len voted in predominately by sickly white liberals, commies and blacks in South Auckland.
So it costs me your poor old average White red neck who does not give a flying **** about a rail loop or rail airline to the airport, who never will travel in a bus as a passenger unless hell freezes over. Then to give insult to injury wont resign after being caught rooting around.
Sometimes I just wonder if I should move back to Karamea and just drink myself to death.
