| 1401026 | 2015-05-19 23:55:00 | If the GetDataBack CD was hanging, it could have been trying to read the faulty drive, seen windows and Ubuntu ( linux) do similar with faulty drives, can sometimes take an hour or more for it to give up, or simply hang and stay Hung. If Puppy doesn't see the drive as well, then there's a strong possibility the drives to far gone, could be the circuit board failed or internals in the drive, either way, if its sent away to a data recovery company, the warranty will be voided as they have to disassemble the drive or change the circuit board. Sometimes they have to actually remove the Platters, and put them in another case, this is a specialist job, and costs a fair amount $$$$$$$. Had one customer a few years back, HDD had failed had all his work stuff on it NO backups, he said he "HAD" to have it all back, no matter the cost, sent it away to a data recovery company, he didn't even hesitate when I said the quoted price was over $2500 :waughh: |

Otherwise, the data that I wasn't able to retrieve off it isn't worth spending hundreds of dollars on AND voiding the warranty so I'm just going to leave it I think if I can't get into it with Puppy. |

| 1401028 | 2015-05-20 01:10:00 | I know on a older version of Ubuntu, you had to go into the menu/system ( from memory) and there was the second drive, once double clicked it then showed on the desktop. But from the puppy forum : "Please note that Puppy Linux cannot help you if your hard disk is unreadable or its file system is badly damaged!" Edited: just tried that knopix - GetdataBack, on the knopix folder it shows the Hard Drives, so if the CD wont boot, or hangs then its trying to read the drive, but cant. |

Try ddrescue in Linux to image the drive. Then mount the image and scan that with your recovery tools in Windows. If the drive is not too far gone it will probably work pretty well. Don't know if Puppy has it though. |

| 1401030 | 2015-05-21 20:22:00 | The best software I have used (so far) in your situation is Macrium Reflect. Download the 30 day trial or the Free version from Paramount Software. I recently was faced with a case of unbootable desktop and the user - my nephew - a post graduate student had saved all of his further study data for business management without any backup. I was able to retrieve all of his libraries and reloaded them after reinstalling Win 7. |
