1389888 2014-12-11 01:12:00 Somebody on a benefit is paying $400 a week for rent, with just one kid, they're fools.

You don't *have* to have a house of your own even, flat with your one child with another solo parent, suddenly a 3-bedroom house for $400 is being split 2-3 ways whatever...

Besides, you can have a "meal" of spaghetti on toast with cheese and some sausage for like $1... IIRC a loaf of bread is $1, and you can get 5 cans of spaghetti for $2 at the supermarket. It's not "healthy", but the point is there's a myriad of ways to eat a bunch of meals for the "$20 in gas from hamilton" (YEAH RIGHT! On a motorbike maybe).

Standard food parcels were prepared depending on the size of each family, valued at $65 for a family of four or $17 for a single person. Most included canned food, sausages, milk, bread, margarine and spreads, flour, rice, pasta, cereal, biscuits, teabags, sugar, fresh vegetables, one toilet roll, soap and shampoo.
So ... For the "$20 gas from Hamilton", could have easily got them the $17 pack... Or more realistically, closer to the $65 worth. Coz a trip to Hamilton <-> Auckland ain't $20.

1389889 2014-12-11 01:17:00 CliveM's sentiments are fully endorsed by me. Absolutely no excuse for the way W&I handle the business. I'm afraid we have become too PC and yobs that are the W&I perpetuate the problem. Time someone showed some spine instead of bending over in front of the "poor masses". Bryan (147)

Eleanor Anaru receives a sole-parent benefit of $299 . 45 plus family tax credit of $92 . 73 and an accommodation supplement that lifts her income to about $500 a week . She pays $400 for rent, leaving just $100 .

And then her accommodation supplement is removed because she has gone boarding . For $400 she gets $109 accommodation .

It's very easy for those who haven't had to live it to pass judgement . They have no idea what budgets are and how something - a dead fridge, car repair, anything can stuff it for months .

This is why govt shouldn't be selling off state houses . In fact they should be building more, cheap rental units rather than 'homes'
So whats happening is govt handouts/benefits is going straight into the hands of landlords, for their profit .
Wouldnt it be better having that taxpayer paid rent actually go back to the govt (state housing rent), rather going to than some 3rd party landlord ?

1389892 2014-12-11 04:00:00 This doesn't help either: Trudy Tapu, 25, has three children aged 9, 8 and 6, with a fourth due in July
Sure, accidents happen, but really?

Quite likely 4 different fathers none of whom are contributing to child care and cannot be forced to because Trudy is not quite sure who they all are.

Google Eleanor Anaru and you will see why she is short of cash. I doubt she can even spell budget let alone use one.

It's easy to ignorantly presume somebody else on the other side of a computer screen hasn't "walked the walk"... Because it'll suit your overly sympathetic viewpoint.

1389895 2014-12-11 04:41:00 Finding the fix is the problem.

You’ll find some of these people are just bludgers and will always be.

Some are just useless at budgeting.

Few, are genuinely living in poverty, indeed a diet wouldn’t go amiss in a number of cases. ;)

I don’t have a “Silver Bullet” but I believe W&I will just have to stop providing Cash to these people and provide Food Vouchers, Power Vouchers, Rent Vouchers and the like to those who can’t or won’t budget. Either that or appoint a Budget Advisor to sort things out and handle their money.

I’ll bet in most cases you’d find multiple mobile phones in these households, a lot of which are top of the range. Then there is the cost of running them. Priorities to some of these people would see the Mobile topped up before food was purchased.

Ignoring the problem won’t fix it so something needs to be done. :groan:

I so agree.

I have a mate who used to manage a Mangare ANZ. He once told me that I would be amazed at what some people spend money on (and get loans to do it).
He told me of a 5 member family just above minimum wage (1 earner 1 on benefit) who rented in Onehunga in a state house. They came to him to get a loan to buy the latest Holden. (by memory I think it was a Holden Commodore VX - approx $49,000) Even though this was a few years ago, nothing has changed.

Personally I wouldn't want to buy a Commodore, but each to their own, but I would love to be able to afford one even with a builders income.

I believe it is fast becomming a time where welfare payments will have to be a voucher based system, and state house tenants have an overseer allocated to them as a mandatory budget adviser. - Is much as I hate to say it, more of a communistic regime for those who cannot operate a budget.
Perhaps even a government funded commune for some members of society who show they are unable to manage their finances with both mandatory and opt in options.
