1401160 2015-05-22 00:50:00 My secondary PC has thrown a wobbly. If I press the power button, there is a brief flurry of activity, then everything just stops, with the power light on. No boot, it doesn't even get to POST.

I'm guessing power supply - any other ideas before I crack it open?

1401161 2015-05-22 01:10:00 Does it beep or anything if there's a speaker in it? Maybe overheating, if it shuts itself off after a few secs

Could be the videocard, if its still going but nothing appears on screen

1401162 2015-05-22 01:35:00 It just stops dead, almost instantly. no beeps, nada. Tony (4941)
1401163 2015-05-22 01:40:00 Maybe overheating then. Either replace the PSU. See if that fixes it. Or clean the case out Speedy Gonzales (78)
1401164 2015-05-22 01:47:00 I'll check it out and report back. Thanks. Tony (4941)

Could be - it is very old.

1401167 2015-05-22 02:16:00 remove the power cord for a few minutes and try again.
Then start trying other things.

1401168 2015-05-22 02:36:00 I've just tried another PSU and got even less! The fans didn't even start, which at least they did before, but immediately stopped. That could well be because that PSU may be stuffed as well, which is why it isn't in a PC any more. If I reconnect the original PSU it goes back to the old behaviour.

I'm now tossing up whether to:

Try the PSU from my working PC (Don't like to mess with a working system)
Buy another PSU just to try (not sure I want to spend the money)
Toss the whole thing as it is pretty old and slow and is really only used for checking stuff out.

Decisions, decisions...

.

1)Use the known working one to test. Yes it's a PITA using your working PC but hey, it's an easy gtest and I'd say it is PSU.
If it isn't, go with choice 3.
