449398 2006-04-25 18:53:00 Hello members
At the moment my setup connects with Linksys wrt54g wireless (for my network)and dsl302g(Telecom"freeby") to the net.The second machine is on a Netgear wireless card.
I am thinking of dropping the Telecom modem and upgrade/change to a Modem/Router.
Any good suggetions about brands. Something that should be as easy to configure as the wrt54g?

I am looking forward to some ideas.

Thanks

449399 2006-04-26 06:18:00 Linksys WAG54g maybe? Exactly the same as the WRT54g but with a modem. If its an early version of the WRT54g put it on trademe as they are in high demand and worth around $120+ secondhand. Pete O'Neil (6584)

Why are only the earlier versions in high demand? what did linksys do to make the later models less attractive?

449401 2006-04-26 06:58:00 You would be lucky indeed to find any new Linksys Routers at present cause there is a chipset shortage. None in the country! Allegedly!!

So, if not Linksys, maybe 3com, NOT D-Link, have had issues with those!.

449402 2006-04-26 07:04:00 The dse ones are not too bad. I have used mine for some time now and it has never missed a beat! even under very heavy NAT loads.

The new ones even come with a firewall built in, and VPN pass-through (P2PTP) is OK.

Look for the XH1169.

Could you explain a bit more regarding the NAT loads and settings as that is part of the reason on my changing to a modem/router.
Also about the VPN P2PTP.
Would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

449404 2006-04-26 07:25:00 NAT: I have sometimes 150+ NAT connections with emule and WinMx from upto 5 PCs

VPN: No probs with windows ( XP, win2k server 2000 ) as long as you pinhole the correct ports!

Setup is good with lots of options for routing, bridging & pinhole.

You can download the manual from the dse website.

The earlier version are capable of running linux (3rd party firmware), with a simple firmware upgrade it can do some really cool stuff and if your really into linux you can make the router do some very niffty things. Very popular in the ethusiast community as they offer exceptional value, with features normally found on $1000+ routers.

I'd hold out for Linksys if I was you, otherwise Netgear, US Robotics, adn 3Com all seem to make solid products. Never used the DSE router before so cant comment on those, although a friend did have one and didnt seem all the impressed.

449406 2006-04-26 08:12:00 Netgear seems good - I have ADSL modem/switch and it is performing well. johnd (85)
449407 2006-04-26 08:44:00 Some of the old DSE routers can be hacked too.

How do the hacked routers hold up under load? I won't imagine they would have too much spare processing power, and all that extra functionality must take extra processing power
