449340 2006-04-25 08:50:00 Hey guys,
I'm 15 and I don't really know anything about computer but I have an HP Pavilion 8802 Desktop Computer. I don't want to buy a new computer because I don't really need one. I only use the computer for homework and assignments etc. (and the odd games i.e. Diablo II, Age of Empires II) I want to upgrade the components one by one and about 1-2 years ago I took the computer into BigByte and asked to add more memory so they added in a 256 MB SDRAM because I didn't know how to do it myself and also I didn't the different types of RAM (I still don't know the different types! ;) ) Now I want a bigger Hard drive for larger files. Currently, I only have a 20 GB hard drive and I need more. My question is, does my computer need a specific hard drive? or can i just, for example, go into like Dick Smiths and ask for a 80, 120 or 160 GB Hard Drive? To bad the BigByte store in CHCH is no longer operating because I would have gone there and just asked them to replace it!
Thanks for your help!

449341 2006-04-25 09:09:00 What version of Windows is on it??

Also, depending on how old the pc is, it may need a BIOS update, so it recognises a bigger hard drive.

What kind of CPU/processor is in it now?? P2,P3,P4??

What kind of system do you want to upgrade to?

Depending on what kind of system you want to upgrade to, you may have to replace the mobo, which may also affect the kind of ram it uses.

Ok

A BIOS is part of the motherboard. Info about it here (en.wikipedia.org)

The processor is an AMD Duron Processor 900MHz

Depending on what you want with do. ie: Play better games / video editing, or whatever. If you want to play more graphical games, or something like video editing, I would get another motherboard. Only thing is, you may have to replace the ram and the CPU/processor as well.

449344 2006-04-25 10:58:00 hardrive sizes shouldn't be much of a bother. you will have to use an IDE hardrive not a SATA. you could run both hardrives (new+old) but you might be pushed for space in the case (only one free 3.5" bay which means the hardrives will cook), i think you would have to use the 5" bay with 3.5"-5" adaptors. otherwise just replace the existing drive being you will have to ghost over the old data or reinstall everthing onto the new drive. not exactly newbie material but it can be done easy enough. tweak'e (69)
449345 2006-04-25 19:00:00 if it runs a 900Mhz then it'd most likely be fine with a 80gb harddrive.....only one way to find out is to buy it then stuff it in .....if it doesn't like it you can use free 'ddo' software to fool the bios and then the systsem will work well......you dont need a new motherboard/case whatever ...... drcspy (146)
449346 2006-04-26 10:53:00 So can I just go into like Dick Smiths and just ask for a 80 GB hard drive? Or is there different types of hard drives like there are different types of memory for example for memory there are SDRAM or DDR etc? Is that the same for hard drives where there are different types? Also can I install a bigger hard drive? (When i mean bigger like as over 80 GB like 120 or so?)
I was also wondering, how can i find out what SDRAM my computer uses? Because there are 16 Chip and 8 Chip ones. I'm just going by the Dick Smith Electronics website and I just searched SDRAM and it came up wtih 16 chip or 8 chip.
Thanks!

449347 2006-04-26 11:18:00 Ram is depending on your motherboard slot you should bring it to PC store to check it before buying the right ram. I don't know much about DSE so sorry can't help much. Chips? I'm not sure about chips but my ram is 184 pin.

Old games does not need many requirements.
E.g. My system is quite a powerful machine even for a 2 yrs plus computer.
P4 Dual Core(2 CPU's) 3000GHz Selfdom freeze/frozen. Hardly ever unless spyware or virus.
Gaming power for Age of Empires III no problem but my single core CPU could not handle the speed at all, and so laggy.
Ram of 1.5GB which is not bad.
At the moment I'm running dual HDD which gives me a HDD of more than 400GB+ of space for storing files. I also need a bigger HDD due to heavily increasing of file size. At the moment I have almost 200GB used up. Lol. Still running fine. But when the next few yrs come I need to prepare more than $3000 plus to get a PC that can last for few yrs which is supporting new software and gaming performance.

P.S. Some PC suck up your electricity bill costing you quite an amount if you turn on this type of computer for too long. Plus you need a good cooling system for this type of compouter because this computer CPU heats up very easily than other single core one.

If you wanted to upgrade a good computer then prepare thousands of dollars for it.;) Plus the electricity fee and software protection because you don't want your thousands dollars computer to attack by viruses. lol. it's true.

449348 2006-04-26 11:28:00 Ali_C, I take this (h10025.www1.hp.com) is your pc? bob_doe_nz (92)
449349 2006-04-26 11:32:00 I think that PC got not enough power to play Age of Empires III which sucks up quite a hugh power from the system. MTLance (6768)
