| 449168 | 2006-04-24 21:21:00 | Can someone just explain the Internet speeds to me. like 512k, is that the slowest? Is 1MB Internet speed double that of 512k? Wat does K stand for? And how about MB? Megabytes? Megabits? Is the highest speed connection 8Mbp? Wat does mbp? stand for? Thanks |

| 449169 | 2006-04-24 21:54:00 | first you need to know what's the difference between bits and bytes one byte is 8 bits remember this first then things won't be so confusing then there's the prifix of kilo mega giga etc.. they're just easy ways to say big numbers read here (en.wikipedia.org) internet speed is in bits/sec so comes in kilobits/sec and megabits/sec the 512k thing you have here is actually 512kilobits/sec and 1Mb is 1megabits/sec when you download things the speed you see is kilobytes/sec which gets people confused because of the byte and bit difference 512 slowest? nah..use to have those 128kbps adsl if you remember 1Mbps doubles 512kbps..yup Mbps is just megabit per second highest speed 8Mbps? in nz?? fastest you can get is usually 3.5Mbps now 8..well..duno..unless you're rich? ..you've got so many question marks..hope i've answered them all |

| 449171 | 2006-04-24 23:23:00 | 8..well..duno..unless you're rich?8MBit is the max the current ADSL system Telecom uses is capable of (provided you are near an exchange). They don't have any plans that actually offer this speed though (most people on 3.5MBit don't even get that at busy times, so there would be little point in offering 8Mbit at this stage). | maccrazy (6741) | ||
