449119 2006-04-24 11:39:00 Hi
This post is related to this (www.pressf1.co.nz) post. So i was wondering how can RAM Die all of a sudden. I know there are some quality chips and some rubbish quality ones out there but how can they run for a while and just die.

449120 2006-04-24 11:50:00 Why not ask this in the other post?
Just because most ICs tend to die early or go for a long time doesn't mean that they can't just die at any stage. Karma, fate, murphy's law etc etc.

I've had a few sticks fail on me, even Corsair who are supposed to be the top dog.

Not ME, I was helping to build Stonehenge. (I feel that old on this very wet Wanganui day) PJ :waughh: :waughh:

449124 2006-04-25 02:33:00 There are five common things that cause RAM to fail GD:

1) Handling without antistatic precautions.

2) Handling without antistatic precautions.

3) Progressive failure through handling without antistatic precautions.

4) Sod's law (only happens if the RAM is very expensive, very hard to find, or critical to something you need to do within the next 15 minutes to meet a deadline).

5)Normal electronic failure.

1-3 are the most common, because everybody thinks it won't happen to them: "I've been handling RAM like this for years and never had a problem before".

Straight-out unprovoked electronic failures are at the bottom of the list, so think carefully about how you handle the replacements and take proper anti-static precautions.

Cheers

Most likely this cause. Static damage is not like whacking it with a hammer - it can die over time.

449126 2006-04-25 03:11:00 During the war, Gremlins, though small, were fairly big creatures, but as time went by, first with the advent of the transistor, through early ICs to todays nanotechnology, Gremlins have become invisible to the naked eye.

But, they are still around, and have multiplied enormously since PCs have been common in every home.
