449060 2006-04-24 09:11:00 I read recently that those of us still using Windows98SE are in for some serious trouble after July 11 when Microsoft ceases support. The story is, that without regular patches for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, we will be subject to all sorts of viruses and malicious software setting itself up on our computers. How real is this threat? And what are our options, apart from upgrading to a more powerful PC and Windows XP? philkiwi (8651)
449061 2006-04-24 09:16:00 I think any machine happily running Win98 at this current time will continue to happily run Win98 untill such time that the hardware fails, Internet Explorer is still currently an easily hacked pile of crap, and the best efforts of MS haven't helped in in any way yet.

I would recomend no one use the MS browser no matter whch version of Windows they are running.

I don't think it really is that much of a worry. If you are concerned "upgrade" to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird - they are in my opinion better products than the MS equivalents anyway.

449064 2006-04-24 09:48:00 Just use a decent firewall with good AV, will stop 99% of attacks. I doubt MS are spending huge amounts of time patching Win98 these days anyway, no great loss. Battleneter (60)
449065 2006-04-24 10:05:00 probably your hard drives would have failed, and so people probably ditch their old system.

Whenever I see Windows 98 (or ME ) I start to laugh.
Probably you can just throw in a bit more memory and use Windows 2000 instead (unless real old). I also wish mac OS 9 would just die too.

449068 2006-04-24 23:28:00 I am going to sound really stupid here but,

Surely there can't be that many more security issues to exploit in 98 after all this time
Considering the percentage of people who use 98 based systems is it really worth the while of the malicious code people to write viruses, worms etc that target those systems, I mean what kudos from their peers will hackers get from targeting an old operating system that has a tiny market share these days, it should decrease surely especially once microsofts new target (ahem operating system) ships, I mean you don't really hear about any new MSDOS viruses out there,

449069 2006-04-25 00:07:00 Actually, it makes one wonder whether all the so-called security patches are necessary anyway. Most of the people on this site who post with their problems and who harvest virus's, trojans, spywares and what-nots seem to be running the latest XP with patches anyway.
So how much good have all the patches done for them??

I call them the click-happy brigade, you can't protect people from their own foolishness.
