449001 2006-04-24 04:42:00 I am looking to purchase a laptop. However, I have yet to find a place in NZ that sells them empty, ie with no software installed.

I have been using linux on my various desktops for a couple of years now, and don't want to have to use windows on a laptop - also, obviously, I don't want to pay for it if I am going to remove it immediately anyway.

Does anyone know of a place in NZ or Aus that does this?

Cheers,
Craig.

449004 2006-04-24 05:42:00 If you buy a 'NZ assembled' notebook you should be able to get it without Windows. All the major brands like Acer, HP/Compaq, Toshiba etc have contracts with Microsoft so they have sell their notebooks with Windows pre-installed.
Places to check for 'NZ assembled' notebooks would be places like Arche Technologies, Ultra Computers, Protac.

Or you can buy whichever notebook you want and then try this (www.linuxjournal.com)
It was in USA but I have heard of a few cases in NZ & Aus that got a refund as well.
