As said, just ditch IE and OE and go for something else (Firefox, Opera, Thunderbird etc) So long as you have a half-pi decent firewall and antivirus you should be sweet, keep em updated (along with anti-spyware) and you'll be good to go for a year or 2 (possibly more) My partner still uses 98SE, I have no intention of changing her OS till the machine breaks down) |

| 449071 | 2006-04-25 03:03:00 | I read recently that those of us still using Windows98SE are in for some serious trouble after July 11 when Microsoft ceases support. The story is, that without regular patches for Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, we will be subject to all sorts of viruses and malicious software setting itself up on our computers. ? Microsoft trying to scare you into getting the latest O/S all the time. Hey theres no support for DOS now but I still own it. MS never prevented anyone from malware anyway - 3rd party antivirus, anti-spyware and a firewall is all you need for your safety. |

| 449075 | 2006-04-25 06:41:00 | I run 98se on two machines. With Firefox and the easy and popular suite of ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spybot, AdAware and CCleaner kept updated and used and without bothering about MS updates for years they both work fine. I wouldn't worry about MS withdrawing support. Once you've got the basic OS from MS you're better off maintaining it with 3rd party stuff anyway, as mentioned above. MS talked about this before but stopped when they realised 98se is BIG in India, and India is getting bigger in IT. |
