449040 2006-04-24 13:39:00 I'm with you guys on this one, I have a different problem though, my speeds have been increased to around 2.5Mbit type speeds (at best) but the latency! won't someone please think of the children! I don't mean to sound dramatic but it's sometimes unusable. Horrible pings even to local sites, timeout problems all over the show and trying to play a multiplayer game over the internet - forget about it. My guess is cramming more people onto each connection *might* be the problem, but the ads said it would be faster so it must just be my imagination.........
Oh and I sympathise with Battleneter, when I moved to a house where I could actually get broardband I had a painful 3 week wait, they forgot to add my name to the 2 week waiting list so I got put on the one week list. Horrible service, horrible company.

449041 2006-04-24 22:32:00 maybe they should post a warning when upgrading your plan to the new 3.5.

Telcom wishes to advise you that although we are advertising and spending millions of dollars letting people know that faster speeds are now here the reality is that once we change you there maybe a huge reduction in your speed , but will will place you in our cue if you do have problems and we endevour not to respond to your querys and problem for at least 3 weeks and pass you through several so called levels of tech teams , and all the while charging you at full price while we endevour not to provide a solution or admit there is infact a problem with our new rollout which is effecting a higher percentage of our users than we are willing to admit.

449042 2006-04-24 22:34:00 "They haven't as yet admitted what the problem is," probably means that they haven't a clue. If you were getting sufficient line speed to give 2M you should still get 2M even if you can't get the line speed to support 3.5M. .
Yes, thats why I haven't moved to another ISP - it might not help.

449043 2006-04-24 22:40:00 Heres a reason why its probablt pointless changing to another ISP:
From another forum:

"changed to Xnet today
Yay, no more xtra! However.... my speed is low. "Your line speed is approximately 339.5 Kbps or 41.6 K bytes/sec." I phoned them up, and it's a problem Telecom (surprise surprise) is having with 'a large number of users outside the Auckland area.' No estimated time of fix, it's in Telecom's hands at the moment. "

449044 2006-04-24 23:00:00 Does this mean I am getting 3.2 Mb's? I'm on the 3.2 plan.

Wish they'd talk English.

Download Speed: 3213 kbps (401.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 134 kbps (16.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
JJJJJ (528)
449045 2006-04-24 23:09:00 2.79 Mbps

which means you can download at 357.46 KB/sec. from our servers

And what does this mean?

Mon, 24 Apr 2006 22:03:51 UTC
1st 128K took 329 ms = 398395 Bytes/sec = approx 3315 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 312 ms = 420103 Bytes/sec = approx 3495 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 313 ms = 418760 Bytes/sec = approx 3484 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 328 ms = 399610 Bytes/sec = approx 3325 kbits/sec
and this one?

Download time: 2.312 seconds
Size of file: 1000 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 3529.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 432.5 (kilobytes/second)

Every test seems different.

Overall am I getting a reasonable speed for the 3.2 plan?

Hopelessly confused.
JJJJJ (528)
449046 2006-04-24 23:25:00 Those 4 test speeds are remarkably consistent, only about the first two or three digits are significant, forget the decimal points. Anyway, you mean 3.5Mbps plan?

What you are getting is good, I don't see why you are confused.

449047 2006-04-24 23:31:00 Those 4 test speeds are remarkably consistent, only about the first two or three digits are significant, forget the decimal points . Anyway, you mean 3 . 5Mbps plan?

Yeah the 3 . 5 Mb plan . I'm so confused I don't even know what plan I'm on

What annoys me is everytime I run a test I get something different . Suppose that's normal .
JJJJJ (528)
449048 2006-04-24 23:34:00 Technically if you are on a 3.5MBit plan you should be able to get around 430Kbps download speeds. If you are getting 357.46 Kbps at peak times, then I would say you are getting better speeds than most people and any additional speed you probably wouldn't notice anyway. Last night I tested my connection and I was getting 1MBit which is ridiculously low.

What annoys me is everytime I run a test I get something different. Suppose that's normal.I used to get more consistent results when I was on 2MBit, however now on 3.5MBit I get anywhere between 1MBit and 3.2MBit depending on the time of day. Basically the idea of the speed test is that shows how fast your speeds will be if you are downloading from a server in New Zealand, so in summary it indicates much stress is on Telecom's infrastructure. :)

Same. But now I get between 200kps and 721kps. :yuck:
