448886 2006-08-22 08:02:00 yeah for a while i was getting fullspeed. i.e 1.6meg down and 300kbps up. that was after the techy came but now im back down to about 800kbps. i hope they bring out wi-max or something faster that can atleast compete with ADSL
Ah, then get him back and make him stand there holding onto the antenna permanently. :D

448887 2006-08-22 08:08:00 I remember hearing somewhere that woosh tried and failed to get permission to use wi-max. Is that right? Greven (91)
448888 2006-08-22 08:15:00 so what from the first of May next year??? :waughh: thats ages. it cant take to long for them to setup something like wi-max

Umm.. I made that post a LONG time ago - ie. before 1 May this year. The "increase" was the increase to 1.6mbit/s from whatever it used to be.

An update on my part is: For a while, I was getting around 400-500kbit/s with reasonable latency (ie. tolerable). In the last few weeks, I've been gettting 200kbit/s at best, and with horrible latency (ie. up to a couple of seconds before pages even begin to show any sign of movement).

The frustrating this is that I live in a building with several other floors, and several other people. A guy on the floor, with his woosh modem/antenna literally in the room DIRECTLY below where I've got my modem/antenna is getting around 1mbit/s down, and 200kbit/s up. I think the fact that we're up on a hill, the 2m or so height difference is somehow causing issues.

RE: Wi-Max, I read that they signed some deal with Sky, but because of the Govt's plan to not automatically renew Woosh's lease in 2010 on the relevant parts of the spectrum (because they want to "reserve" it for broadband internet use... funny that...), Woosh isn't willing to invest in hardware if it means that they won't have the licence to use the frequency in a few years time. I think it's a stupid move on the Govt's part, but what more would you expect from a Labour government?

Woosh currently holds licences to the parts of the 2.3ghz spectrum to use for Wi-Max, however the Govt announced that in 2010 they will not automatically renew Woosh's licence, because they wanted to "ensure it was used for broadband internet development" or something along those lines. I think that it's ridiculous, considering that's precisely what Woosh is planning to do. They have also signed a deal with Sky to use some of their licenced spectrum for Wi-Max, should it be rolled out, and to broadcast IPTV content from Sky over it (and probably allow some sort of interactivity with the existing Sky digital subscribers in terms of on-demand brodcasting etc). The issue really is that Woosh doesn't want to take the risk by pumping millions of dollars into WiMax equipment now, if in 2010 it's possible that they'll lose the right to use that chunk radio frequency (ie. bought out by another firm, say Telecom).

448890 2006-08-22 20:50:00 yes that is a stupid idea of the govt. since woosh are trying to use wi-max for "broadband and internet dovelopment".

i had emailed woosh asking some questions and they replyed asking me if i wanted a techy to come out and fix it since i was connecting to a basestation 10km away instead of the one 200m away.

448891 2006-08-23 06:07:00 After numerous phone calls to Woosh, they find that I'm connecting to the "wrong" antenna of the base station (ie. I'm connecting to one which isn't actually pointing at me). The only thing they said I can do about it is to reboot the modem until it connects to the right one.

I've basically given up trying to achieve decent speeds - I'll just put up with it until the 12 month contract runs out, then switch to something else if I can.

448892 2006-08-23 08:05:00 when does your's run out? im stuck until december :dogeye: so another4 months to go. i think that early disconnection fees are stupid. anyone know why they charge this? thomas09 (10276)

I'm stuck till Feb next year - early disconnection fees are charged by everyone. I'd be surprised if you can find a "broadband" ISP who doesn't charge you disconnection fees if you leave within 12 months.

448894 2006-08-24 14:26:00 Gutted, I'm still in my 30 day money back guarentee period. I was actually always planning on returning it. I told the sales man I just wanted to know the pricing and was planning getting cable... must get a good commission regardless of if I keep it or not. Telstraclear made me wait 8 weeks for cable so who wouldn't start checking out their options.

Maybe I will try connecting to a different base station before I return it just to see if that helps.
