449236 2006-04-25 00:14:00 I have a Pavilion t860a with an ATI Radeon X300SE, 128MB DDR video card and 512MB of SDRAM. My son is keen to play online games such as Battlefields 2. How much RAM and what Video Card for this type of game to be played effectively? brentwill (8471)

These are PCI-E but you if want AGP, just get the best you can afford and can find in AGP.

449238 2006-04-25 13:26:00 go to pricespy (http://www . pricespy . co . nz) to find the cheapest parts in nz .

you need to ditch the pavillion . i personally dont by HP nor Dell :groan:

atleast 1gb of DDR ram, seriously, most gamers recommend 2 but i get away with 1 .

a geforce 6600 will do it nicely for graphics

you will need atleast a 2 . 8ghz pentium4 processor, or a amd64 2800+

a new motherboard also .

basically, you need to ditch the HP and want to build a gaming rig . you will need broadband also, if you dont already have it (and dont get an internal adsl modem)

its good to see a parent supporting his son's gaming

some people will say you need to spend THOUSANDS, i can do it for 1 grand (have just built two sytems for $1K each) . really alot of money and its not quite top or the range but will definetly not need upgrading for a few years atleast . (note my signature)

:nerd: my personal rig, for 1 grand (actually closer to $850 cause i went budget on motherboard and already had some parts from old system):
amd64 3000+
1gb ddr400 ram
geforce 6600GT 128mb . (asus extreme edition - overclocked safely) (pci express)
80gb hard drive (SMART SATA)
raidmax PSU 520w (20A @ 12V)
motherboard, dvd/rw drive, 2 led red fans, case, floppy drive, pci wireless lan adapter, new case also

runs Battlefeild 2 fine! (also does FEAR, Doom3, counter strike, call of duty 2 etc at or near max settings without lag)

i hope this helps, if you're in auckland i could help you out if you decide to build your son a gaming rig now you know the likely minimum cost lol .

(heck, i would build and sell this system on trademe if i had a grand to build another one! and i wouldnt accept trademe money and THEN build it, that would be irresponisble without telling the buyer in advance)
