449239 2006-04-24 23:43:00 I have a home built computer= 2.5hz celeron with 512mb ram, running xp pro sp1 on a 40gb drive. It's worked well for several years, but i had to do a reinstall 2 weeks ago after it started to play up. It wouldn't start properly and i couldn't access parts of the control panel. Last night, my wife went to use it (it had been working well all day and since the reinstall 2 weeks ago) and found it to be frozen (no mouse movement and control/alt/del wouldn't work either). So i turned it off via the on switch on the front panel. This morning I turned it on, power supply started/fans started/a light on the m/board came on, but nothing else no HD sounds and monitor stays blank.

First question is...Is this as bad as I think? Dead m/board or hard drive?

Second question... Can anyone recommend brands/parts for the replacment parts, i would prefer 64bit processor although i don't use it for gaming.

449240 2006-04-24 23:59:00 Check and reseat all the connections, cables and cards. If that fails then remove everything (remove the cables, cards and power) except the graphics card, memory and power to the motherboard and see if you can get into the bios, if you can't then the motherboard could be shorting against the case or a duff motherboard or graphics card, if you can then start adding back the components one by one until it stops. gcarmich (10068)

449242 2006-04-25 00:58:00 Whats the brand/model of the mobo??

Does the motherboard have an onboard LED on it, to show u that power is going to it??

Do you have any molex adapter plugs in the case?? The wires in these can come out, and will stop the system from booting up.

449243 2006-04-25 01:04:00 It's an ASUS P4P800S SE
LED lights up when i turn the power on.
I'm not sure what molex adapter plugs are.

449245 2006-04-25 01:12:00 Yes, it has those plugs coming from the power supply, i checked all those before starting this thread. jabbapam (10283)
449246 2006-04-25 01:19:00 Hmm, you could bring it up here if u want after 3 today.

I'm in Mt Eden, not too far from u. I'll check it out.

449247 2006-04-25 01:25:00 I usually get my support from Eden computers and they seem to have the same motherboard still available "on order" basis. This would save me some dollars as then i would not have to buy new cpu,ram and m/board. jabbapam (10283)
449248 2006-04-25 01:30:00 I'm not too far from Eden Computers .

Theyre just down the road (5-10 min walk) .

If u want me to check it out, just bring the case .

I've got a spare monitor / mouse etc . Let me know .
