My sister got a new computer. it has a 300 GB WEStern digital sata 1 drive. now i was trying to install windows xp on it but XP kept saying that my HDD was not detected until i found that there were sata drivers to be installed. unfortunatley it required a floppy drive so that drivers can be copied to a floppy from the motherboard cd but i did not have a floppy drive so i found another way, which was to set the "Sata Operation mode" to "Non-sata" from bios. and so i did and now im up running winXP.
Well basically what i wanted to ask was
Will switching to non raid or not using raid affect the hard disks performance?.

450072 2006-04-27 12:24:00 Did the HDD comes with the driver? If not it is pretty difficult. You must get the driver from somewhere else or not detected.
If your BIOS have SATA dectecttion then adjust it in the BIOS you have. Hope this helps because I not sure much about SATA.
I got 1 SATA HDD but I run 2 HDD one is PATA and SATA. PATA have WinXP on it and I download the SATA driver from intel to make my SATA HDD working.

450073 2006-04-27 12:31:00 Just try editing your BIOS. Maybe it'll work. I forgot how I got the BIOS set to detect my SATA HDD. Sorry. :p MTLance (6768)

450075 2006-04-27 23:37:00 No, well if u havent got 2 hdd's the same size, RAID wont work anyway .

I use a SATA here . Which isnt running in RAID, and its fine . And XP installed fine on it, without me having to use the SATA drivers, or making a floppy .

If it needs drivers, they're usually on the mobo cd . And may need to be extracted to a floppy .

And the drivers usually have to be installed during the XP install, NOT AFTER Windows has been installed .

However, not ALL SATA hdd's need drivers, in order to run . Unless you've enabled RAID in the BIOS . And you're going to use RAID .

And having SP1, or 2 slipstreamed, on the cd before you do a clean install / install XP, might help things a bit as well .

What do you mean?

I mean u merge /slipstream SP1 or 2 on the XP cd before u install XP .

(You copy the XP cd to the hdd, then add/merge/slipstream SP1 or 2 to it), then burn the whole lot back to a cd .

That way, it may have a better chance of picking up all (or most) of the 300 gb hdd . Which the normal XP (without SP1 or 2), most probably wouldnt do .

450078 2006-04-28 00:39:00 Just set your BIOS IDE to SATA and it should be detected fine. You can only use RAID if you have 2 or more drives and then you have to use the floppy drives which provide a SCSI interface type driver for the RAID.

Some BIOS's also require setting the Boot Rom option to allow booting from the SATA drive when it is under a RAID configuration.

I already have XP Installed now .
