| 450069 | 2006-04-27 11:56:00 | A helpful hint for those of you who might be struggling with drive lettering and naming. I installed a 4-slot USB card reader. XP proceeded to be very helpful, as it does and automatically juggled all my drive letters - including the network maps which were close by. Drat! I was stuck with a DVD drive with the label "Compact Flash Reader" hah! The Micro$oft KB articles were helpful with re-assigning drive letters I was thus able to re-organise the fixed drives back into sequence to suit me and my quirks. The artcles however carefully ignored labels. All of the property dialog boxes were blank; My Computer showed the old names and the label boxes would steadfastly not accept any characters. I googled for ages with no success apart from one place which suggested going back to DOS and using the LABEL command... :) I should have known to think simple from the outset... I headed into Regedit and just searched for "Compact Flash Reader". Bingo! There it was under : HKEY_Local-Machine\software\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Explorer \DriveIcons\[your drive letter here]\DefaultLabel (the label changes on the fly for DVDs etc...) Usual caveats about earthing yourself before using regedit etc... A simple 'Modify', close Regedit, close My Computer, re-open it, and voila! - your very own default label name appears. How satisfying to having everything neat and ordered. Neil |

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons You can also put in Defaulticon, which give devices, their own icons . |
