449865 2006-04-27 00:24:00 Just changed over from Win98 to WinXP, but the batch files have stopped working.

Please, what is the correct line to delete all folders in F drive.

We used this in the past deltree /y f:*.* but comes up with unknown switch.

And what switches are used in XCopy to update only those files that have been saved with a more recent time stamp.

We used this xcopy c:\1cmr\*.* f:\1cmr /s /d but it no longer works, with no warning on screen as to why!

Thanks John in Mosgiel

449867 2006-04-27 02:48:00 Hi Rob

Sorry, but your Cmd line doesnt work . i get a brief flash of the DOS box and thats it . Ive tried every variation of
rmdir /y f:* . * but no luck .

F drive is on a memory stick . I need a batch file to clear out the f drive, then load with Xcopy folders & subfolders on C drive, like CMR, HF2000 and a few others .

Then every two hours or so, incrementaly backup files from those folders .

If I can get one line to work, I can sort out the rest, its getting that first line to work .

Thanks . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . John :-)

449868 2006-04-27 03:03:00 batch files are terrible.

Use something like autoit v3 (www.autoitscript.com), and move into the current century. :D

449869 2006-04-27 03:07:00 Searching for "DOS commands in XP (pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=67992&highlight=commands)" in the PressF1 Search, would have helped, John. ;)

I think that sometimes /Start/Run cmd.exe works better ... by giving you a proper command window.

rmdir /? should give you all the options ... rmdir /s treename should do what you want. There might still be a "/y" to avoid prompting for each file. :groan:

449870 2006-04-27 04:03:00 Deltree no longer exists in XP, it's "rd" or "rmdir", as Graham L mentions.

"rd /?" (no quotes) help
"rd /s mydirectory" (no quotes) used to remove a "tree"
"rd /s /q mydirectory" (no quotes) used to remove a "tree" without prompting.

If Start...Run... Cmd doesn't work, try
Start... Run.. Command

Nothing wrong with batch files. It's an open secret that Microsoft keeps improving the command shell; too bad they couldn't have had all the bells-and-whistles in DOS ten years ago.

Even the most hard-core network engineer will occasionally whip up a small batch file, when needed.

449871 2006-04-27 06:53:00 Just a small comment, command.com in XP opens a MSDOS prompt, and it is the plain vanilla 16 bit command.com from Win ME, whereas cmd.exe opens the XP command line, and is very much more powerful with "bells and whistles" as mentioned. Terry Porritt (14)

Grahame L

I visited that site before posting here .

Im Sh . t Scared of DOS Del command, dont want to delete the data on C drive, whixch is why I was specific in my initial query, deleting all Files / Folders on F drive .

Ive more or less solved the problem, buy trialing another program ViseVersa as not only are the files backed up on to two memory sticks at different PCs on the network, they are backed to to each other PC as well .

Proved its worth the other day when the Win98 PC HDrive failed . Only 2hrs lost and one of those was over Lunchtime . Backups on the other PCs had me going again in 10min .

Cheers . . . . . . . . . . . John W
