449658 2006-04-26 08:34:00 I have an APC 350 CS UPS connected only to the PC and nothing else, but yesterday when there was a power cut for 3-5 seconds, my PC shutdown itself since the UPS doesn't seem to provide sufficient power to my PC.

There is a light on the front of the UPS that says Replace Battery, but it's not on.

I was wondering whether I need to buy a larger UPS or just change the battery is enough?

My PC spec

Pentium 805 dual core
Asus Motherboard
1GB DDR2 533 x 2
SATA HDD x 2
DVD writer x 1
TV Tuner card x 1
7900GT display card x 1
ACBel 550W PSU
120mm fan x 2
160mm fan x 1

Thanks

449659 2006-04-26 08:44:00 Without checking the specs of your UPS maybe that is what should happen. Small UPS smooth power normally and provide for orderly shutdown if power is lost. Your software may allow time before shutdown to be altered. PaulD (232)
449660 2006-04-26 09:29:00 I am no expert on UPS BUT if it was such a short P/C shouldn't the UPS just said there was one and kept going? The_End_Of_Reality (334)
449661 2006-04-26 09:46:00 what happens if you leave the PC running and then remove the wall power supply from the UPS? bob_doe_nz (92)
449662 2006-04-26 11:22:00 have you tested it before?

at first look the UPS is way under powered. you really need 500VA and above ...preferably 1000VA.

That UPS is 210 watts/350 VA rated.
You have a PSU rated at 550 watts input (likely 600 Watt input) on a 210 Watt output rated UPS basically.

I regularly switch off at the wall to test the UPS, I run 2 x 600VA, one for the PC and one for the monitors and router.

I previously had a 400 VA UPS and it would handle the PC (2 GHz P4) with new batteries, but adding 2 LCD monitors was too much. As batteries age they will be unable to provide the sudden current required, but that cannot be sensed by the "replace battery" light which usually only senses voltage, and advises of a failed cell.

That's what it used to do with my old PC, it will switch over to battery mode and keep the PC running.

The UPS will switch to battery mode but the PC powers off immediately.

Yes and No .. Yes because it used to work with my old PC but it was like a year ago or more :p , No because I haven't test the UPS with this PC at all.

It's not the s/w this time, it seems like the UPS doesn't have enough power.
