Not so simple!

Depending on the installation media, if it was OEM, Retail etc depends on if purchasing a new key to replace the VLK will work or not. More specifically you cannot use an XP Home key either.

5am:
It shouldnt be affecting your dvd playback in any way / shape or form. I would suggest you try playing your DVD with something like VideoLAN Client (http://www.videolan.org)

Cheers

Chill.

449593 2008-04-04 16:26:00 But what about those of us who do NOT have pirated software? What about those of us who formatted the drive and installed Windows from the original pc disk and we get the message about counterfeited software?

What are OUR options?

Phone Microsoft & explain to them what you have done, & they should be able to give you a new key to enter.

Have you got a brand name computer like a Dell or Acer etc… or its it a home built computer??

PS: You should have started a new thread, instead of bumping up a old one ;)

449595 2008-05-06 10:50:00 truly follow this for bliss.

WIndows update(KB905474) if its still there.

then proceed in windows explorer to :

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Scan in detal all subfolders carefully reading every file

and delete anything that is remotely connected to

windows genuine advantage

next run regedit

search for wgalogon delete whole root directory when found.

then go to

C:\WINDOWS\system32

find wgatray.exe and wgalogon.dll

delete them both

this should solve those pesky notification windows at logon spalsh screen

and the desktop and the popups that microsoft likes to embed :)

449596 2008-05-06 11:02:00 Well to solve this prob once and for all, there is now a tool (and yes it does exist, even tho MS told the maker to remove it, but its on the net), that will remove it for you.

It'll scan the system and if found, remove the files KB905474 installs

Then all you have to do, is reboot, and voila its gone

449597 2008-05-12 19:10:00 Dude, hahhahha . What are you all thinking? I have you reply right here . Come grab it .

YOU HAVE PIRATED XP . . . LIKE OH MY GOSH . How dare you take advantage of a monopolizing, multi-multi-billion dollar company? Some people . You know I’ve heard, don’t know, but I’ve heard you can fix the issues like the blue star and windows update icons from annoyingly appearing constantly . Like I said, dunno know but, I’ve heard . Here’s what I heard . Contrary to popular belief: you don’t want to delete any files nor start messing with the registry . Here’s what I’ve heard .

I’ve heard that to get rid of ANNOYING blue star go to “My Computer” icon>Local Disc (C:)>Windows>system32 . Now rename these two files (any other name will do): “WgaTray . exe” and “WgaLogon . dll” . Now close window . Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click “Task Manager” and click the “Processes” tab, click on “wgatray . exe” and click “End Process” button and warning window will pop up and hit “Yes” . Restart computer and BLUE STAR GONE BYE BYE .

Now you will probably be getting an ANNOYING windows update icon on your system tray . I’ve heard you can do this . Go to: “Start” button>run>type in "services . msc" and there's gonna be two areas you want to concern yourself with in that window . First is "Automatic Updates": right click on that and hit properties and the properties window pop up, you will see "Startup type", select manual and hit "apply" . Now click "Automatic Updates" and at the upper left corner select "stop the service" . The second area of concern is "Security Center", take the same two steps that you did for "Automatic Updates" . When you've finished go up to the file button of the window and hit exit . Then restart you computer . VOILA!

You know I’ve also heard Mr . Gates loves to give to the community and he loves his philanthropy . I think adding XP to his generosity is quite becoming . Thanks Bill .

449598 2008-05-12 21:01:00 In this scenario, renaming would be the same as deleting. The key factor is the files are not there when Windows tries to start them.

And turning off Auto-Updates? Thats just asking for troubles IMHO...
