449561 2006-06-17 15:31:00 For those total computer novices like me I did the following and it worked:

1.) Go to Control panel click on Automatic Updates then click on turn off automatic updates. This will put an icon in your tool bar that notifies you that automatic updates are not turned on and I don't know how to get rid of that.

2.) Do a file search for WGA*.*. After you get the list, select all and delete them. Two files indicated that I did not have authority to delete them. I then highlighted them and changed their file name to OldWGA*.*.

3.) I then rebooted my computer and everything came back to normal except I have an icon in my tool bar that tells me Automatic Updates is not turned on. Everything else is gone including the login notices and the little blue star icon that tells you "Your system is at risk."!

I know someone else in this thread provided 98+% of this information and I thank them for their help. After I did it with some trepidation, I just thought a non computer technical write up might help more people.

Obviously I don't condone anything illegal and accept no liability. All I'm saying is the three steps above worked for me.

449562 2006-06-17 20:33:00 For christs sake, just download the fixes from any half decent torrent site. ie not tpb or torrentspy.

Anyway, as I said before, mods should really lock this thread.

449564 2006-06-17 23:32:00 There is no reason for this thread to be locked.

It is quite a legitimate activity to remove spyware that was infiltrated by Microsoft under the guise of being a critical update.

I go along with what Brian Livingston has to say on the topic, as has already been posted on PF1.

Quote: "Windows Genuine Advantage — the controversial program Microsoft auto-installed as a "critical security update" on many PCs starting on Apr. 25 — not only causes problems for many users but has now been proven to send personally identifiable information back to Redmond every 24 hours.

This behavior clearly fits any plausible definition of "spyware." Some tech writers have said categorizing WGA as spyware is arguable. But I have no hesitation in calling the program a security nightmare that Microsoft should never have distributed in its present form." End of quote.

449565 2006-06-18 10:17:00 The techniques required to disable unwanted spyware seem to change with each new release of the WGA. For those interested in this esoteric discussion I found this thread most informative : forum.antiwpa.org.ru

449566 2006-07-16 20:34:00 i downloaded this update.. and even after attempting to be rid of it... my browser feels like the slowest thing on the plannet.. i get ripples in the screen when i scroll down... anyone else? bandro (10294)
449567 2006-07-17 01:41:00 That 'slow scrolling' in a browser window usually means you have to re-install your monitor/video card drivers. Not sure why the 'WGA prog' would affect them but give it a go, it can't hurt. Shortcircuit (1666)

No, check it yourself, with Google.

The tag "you may be a victim of software counterfeiting" will list this thread in the top 6 hits by domain, hence the "worldwide interest"
