| 449998 | 2006-04-28 13:22:00 | Wow you lot are like a bunch of circling vulture internet Police, looking for a noose to lynch the new members. Come on, swapshop's first response may have been a bit stilted, but what made me spit my coffee out was this comment... Perhaps you should take your own advice. The grammer on the website is terrible. Pot, meet kettle?? Hehe, oh well, carry on, maybe we could get Creighton to add a few comments? |

I'm amazed at how many people in here (non-coders) are fantastic whingers about websites (grammar, look, etc). If you'll notice, the only time the coders say anything (usually) is to either constructively criticise, or say well done. |

| 450000 | 2006-04-28 21:09:00 | No skin off my nose, and not the point i was making. Tradef1 was setup as a resource for members of this forum to trade computer items, 1 item or 10 000, makes no difference, and has had no promotion apart from right here. As for the error, The site hosting was mucked around with, it will be fixed, no biggie. Metla use this to remove the first crawled error www.google.com (http://) |

Metla use this to remove the first crawled error www.google.com (http://) Originally Posted by pctek Perhaps you should take your own advice. The grammer on the website is terrible. Actually one reason for the bad grammar was to pack the front page and the actual page contents with keywords for search engines. Two types of page one is for human and one for SE. Nowdays if you use javascript or hide and hidden text of text the same color as the backgd and google finds it you get a penalty. Hence use a tool like submit express or poodle to check your pages are correct title, tag, desc and content wise. Biggest issue to get all this correct for a SE is the mysql query in the url. This actually needs to be rewritten to a better url. So late nights, few beers a lot of learning, somewhere are 6000+ users, 1200-4500 hits a day its doing pretty good. When trade was sold we were interviewed and made it to the press and dominion post. Its interesting what people think and you guys seem to be It savvy so we have all had digs but we can all pick on each others sites. I guess what gets to us is how TM got so big yet some many people hate it and how they treat users when things go wrong, just read the message boards. We created a site from a free script just like every other site that's been listed(except for the big corp ones). The script has been hacked for two years as we learnt php, html, mysql, SEO. The guys who created it are like you, we work in IT building servers, Msoft. Linux, Unix, Novell (still) so I think you should understand how hard and the actual amount of work that has been put into this site. The facts, zero budget wife is pregant again( wasnt me :)) hence google adsense to claw back some of the hosting cost. Hosting is now 400mb, Mysql DB of 56mb and growing, Bandwidth is now over 12gb/month. All this is from zero budget. We work 8-14 hr days in the real word them come home kiss the wife and code till late so yes we make mistakes. Swapshop is very open to ideas from you guys as IT guys love technology. We have been learning ajax , this is where the page is changed witout a refresh but this will take a will to convert a mysql/php to allow it to rendered with Ajax. So my point I guess is this why not help some guys who are trying hard to achieve a goal versus takening the crap out of us? Grammars been explained as a techinque for SE's. I think we get too passionate about our projects and some time need to take a step back and look at the big picture. I guess to be called a copy of 700million dollar site is actually a good thing so thanks. Anyway we are keen to get good feedback from the forum, in return we will assist anyone with php, mysql, html, scripting, servers, desktops you name it 5 senior IT guys at your service. SO enough of the crap started on this thread, lets make it postive again.... |

Anyway we are keen to get good feedback from the forum, You're the one that said keep it professional. Maybe its is new, maybe you are working long hours but its your advertising - if the first thing people see on the front page is bad grammer or whatever then they will get a bad first impression. But you only want nice comments........ As for Metlas site, it may be small yet but its well written. |

Front page is a landing page for SE's at this stage our test page is still in dev form. Thanks for the good comment |

| 450004 | 2006-04-29 00:44:00 | Ok now thats sorted . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and everyone put their :2cents: worth in maybe we can be constructive and help each other . . . . . not destructive to each other . . Each site has different use's and qualities . . . . . . . . . . . . you just need to work out some of the finer points . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and having different people not connected to your site checking them out can point out some failings that you may not see . Use these points as positives and go from there . Have a nice day, It takes all sorts to make the internet world go round . . . . . . . . . we cant all be perfect beetle's . . . . . . . . . . . :p beetle  |
