| 449542 | 2006-05-30 23:23:00 | This software piracy detection tool by Microsoft is not acurate . I just assembled a brand new computer and installed a BRAND NEW GENUINE OEM WinXPH os on it ( for a client ) and it came up the the counterfeit message soon after hitting winupdate . The OEM package was complete with manual in its blister pack and unopened . M$ is becoming more hassle that its worth . cm |

| 449543 | 2006-05-31 00:22:00 | I had the same message. I've bought so many copies of Windows it blew my mind. Somewhere along the line my computer must have been modiifed, probably when my motherboard was replaced, but I am blowed if I am giving yet more to MS. So:- (1) find all files with wga in their name. (2) either delete or rename them (3) change the auto update from MS so that auto updates do not happen. Done by going to Control Panel and "automatic updates" icon. Can also be done through CP then SYSTEM or SECURITY. Apparently there is still a chance that you will be notified that auto updates is turned off. I don't remember how to do this. Of course you loose the advantage of updates. I would love to bill MS for all the operating systems I no longer use. |

The mistake must be at Microsofts end ( they have incorrectly listed this serial number as bad ) and I have been instructed by the hardware vendor to phone Microsoft about it. cm |

| 449545 | 2006-05-31 01:44:00 | Problem resolved - called Microsoft - was told to go here catalog.microsoft.com and download/run the keychanger tool - re-enter the same serial code - and now it works..... Why does the same code work now when it was deemed to be bad before? hmmm think I'll stick with Linux :) cm |

While I don't condone piracy, there will be oodles of poor sods out there who have had there PCs loaded with a from a Windows OEM or corporate licence CD when they've been serviced, especially the HP, Dell, Acer machines out there. Also, as looks to be already the case, MS are renound for getting these things a little bit wrong. |
