2006-05-08 03:17:00 | Updates can still be done on non-legit versions of windows. Just means they have to be manually downloaded and installed. Well, that depends on whether you validate, and you pass. If not, then you wont be able to get updates from Windowsupdate, or the MS download center. The only other way to get them, would be if u get them from other sites, or other means.

2006-05-08 03:38:00 | As I understand it at the moment, you have to have the latest Validation tool installed to be able to use the Windows Update site. But the Notification tool does not have to be installed to get updates. I would imagine that sooner or later, the Notification tool will also have to be installed to get updates. It has to be admitted that Microsoft saying the Notification tool cannot be uninstalled is a bit like a red rag to a bull ?? :) [Just to clarify my position, no flags, balloons or anything came up when I installed the Notification tool, ie legit :) ]

Negative . . . believe me updates can be downloaded no problem and installed . Without needing to validate . I'm talking about NOT using Windowsupdate, but still getting the downloads manually from MS's site . |

2006-05-08 06:24:00 | ...but how can he get rid of the annoying icon and message? anyone? i found it, its called wgatray.exe in system 32. i will try to delete it in safe mode. sucess. its gone. found 2 entries. the one listen on page 1 and in system 32. plus one entry in regedit. so no more MS SPYWARE! heheNot using a pirated version of the operating system would resolve this issue. You wish to use their product, then buy a license. If they cannot afford a legal version, then install Linux. Quite simple. No point whinging about MS using this method to highlight illegal installations. :groan:

2006-05-11 04:18:00 | same thing happened to me just now 30 min, and didn't know how to get rid of that star-icon in taskbar. Searching over the internet i found this forum, and when finded out how it's called the application, i have searched in drive C for wgatray, which is placed in system32, in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch, and in one more locaton which i forgot. But the file wont delete, so i followed a old trick : www.theeldergeek.com hope you'll handle! P.S. i use to have automatic updates on, but now ****'em!

2006-05-13 15:02:00 | It is easy to fix this problem: 1. Use regedit and goto \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\SOFTWARE \Microsoft\WindowsNT \CurrentVersion \Winlogon\Notify delete folder "Wgalogon" and all the contents 2. set your system folders to unhide Folder view or you won't see dllcache folder 3. go to c:\windows\system32, rename WgaTray.exe to WgaTray.exeold rename Wgalogon.dll to Wgalogon.dllold 4. go to c:\windows\system32\dllcache, rename WgaTray.exe to WgaTray.exeold 5. kill wgatray.exe from TASK MANAGER. Done. If still have problems, reboot the computer and login to windows xp in safe mode and repeat the above steps
