449852 2006-04-27 09:59:00 download manger.......try getright http://www.getright.com/
Thanks tweak'e but at US$25 or NZ$39-53, it far outstrips my needs. Many moons ago I used to have Mygetright which was great .... and free but they did away with that

Open source and free and basic interface which might take some getting used to.

Hi tweak'e
I really do appreciate your advice but have searched more than one site and they seem clearly to say that there is a cost - eg
www.download.com
or at the Getright site itself -

Maybe there is something I am missing :waughh: - quite possible !

Just a correction - it does not bug me to now and then buy a program. I have bought AZZ Cardfile (on the excellent recommendation of, I think it was, Foxy MX). Also have bought "Polderbits" (which is an excellent sound recorder/editor, though I have not yet evaluated it against "Audacity" which has consistently been recommended by members (so I may have been overenthusiastic there !! :horrified ). Am also very keen to buy "Acronic True Image" when I am confident enough to be able to work it and the peripherals.

No, it is just that on balance spending $39-53 is outside of the benefits that I would get from it. I only download upgrades, occasional programs, music ... but not videos or big amounts of music etc. Very rare that my downloads get interrupted or are very big. It would be good to accelerate the downloading of podcasts but am training myself to leave them to get on with it while I watch "House". :D

449856 2006-04-28 03:30:00 Hi Misty :)

GetRight is shareware but you don't have to buy it to use it. I have found the "trial" version works well and doesn't continually nag you to buy it so I would recommend downloading it and giving it a whirl.

Even though I have it installed on my older computer for scheduling big downloads overnight I haven't actually used it much myself and, like you, am not keen on paying for it with the very limited use it gets. Opera takes care of my everyday downloads quite nicely.

Hi Foxy :)
Thanks, I will give it a whirl, there are times when it would be useful .

Firefox does my normal downloads . One day when I have a bit more time I will give Opera a whirl too !! ;)

Thanks Foxy - for the umpteenth time !!

Hi Misty. Foxy has got a point there on Opera's own download manager. The best thing about it is that when you are downloading mp3 using the download manager, you can preview the downloaded part via your media player.

I used to be a fan of Getright until Speedy Gonzalez came along and introduced me to FreeDownloadManager ;) No pesty reminders and the ability of it to integrate itself / take over IE download are the best things that I like about it. Besides this, it also has a media player which is also capable of playing partially downloaded part of a mp3 track (though most of the time this doesn't work  )

Cheers :)

Kind of you to suggest this James. The thought of not having reminders is appealing. However being able to play partially downloaded mp3's has no attraction !! I am not yet buying mp3's through the web because iTunes not yet available. Am looking forward to when it does happen (before I retire ????).
Cannot comprehend the need for playing partial downloads at all - there may be a sound valid reason .....but at my age I have a bit more patience (never thought that would happen !).

Appreciate your input however and I will think about the reminders thingy. Incidentally I downloaded Getright about quarter of an hour ago and now having committed and at my glacial pace it may be another year or two before I can make a decision to change again. Additionally I find (no disrespect) that Foxy MX suggestions are excellent and not to be passed over lightly.
cheers

449861 2006-04-28 11:50:00 Why do people use Download Managers anyway? I've never experienced problems managing my own downloads.

I've never tried using one, having knowledge that many of them are filled with spyware. But yeah, why use one anyway?
