449668 2006-04-26 13:38:00 I am with tweak'e here.
That UPS is 210 watts/350 VA rated.
You have a PSU rated at 550 watts input (likely 600 Watt input) on a 210 Watt output rated UPS basically.

I regularly switch off at the wall to test the UPS, I run 2 x 600VA, one for the PC and one for the monitors and router.

I previously had a 400 VA UPS and it would handle the PC (2 GHz P4) with new batteries, but adding 2 LCD monitors was too much. As batteries age they will be unable to provide the sudden current required, but that cannot be sensed by the "replace battery" light which usually only senses voltage, and advises of a failed cell.

Looks like I need a bigger UPS afterall, just wondering whether I should try replacing the old battery with a new one that has a bigger capacity or should I just forget it and get a 600 - 1000VA one instead?

Fitting an external battery is dangerous as the 12v DC`is actuallt tied one side to the 240v in many "non isolated" UPS, meanung its very easy to electrocute some unsupecting person.

Also the rated power of the UPS will not be bcreased by a larger battery, just the ength of time it will run for on battery will increase with a larger capacity battery.

You may find as I did that the cost of two medium size ones is far less than one larger one. I got a special deal (non repeatable) of just over $80 each +GST.

Mine will connect to the PC and do an automated shutdown, but that is not needed for my use. The connection is useful to monitor the load though, they run about 35% - 50% loaded.

Thanks, just one more thing, does it matter which brand I get? Should I get an APC UPS or spend the same amount of money on some unknown brand with a bigger VA ?
