2006-04-27 10:51:00 | You will find XP is a memory hog. An average installation uses 200-300mb under light use. I suggest you should upgrade the memory to just 512mb if you want it to be relatively fast and snappy. 256mb is manageable, but things feel a bit chuggish with it. Other than that, it should be fine. Windows 98? I wouldn't worry about upgrading it, to be honest. Microsoft support isn't really worth much :p Just have decent firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, and you should be fine.

2006-04-27 10:53:00 | Don't even think about trying to install XP. Just stay with 98SE. The so-called end of MS support doesn't really mean anything in practice, just that there will be no more security updates. Most likely all updates that have been issued up to the present will remain on MS website. Edit: quote: relatively fast and snappy with 233MHz and old motherboard, IDE drives etc, ??????? you must be joking or dreaming

2006-04-27 11:05:00 | I agree - stay with Win 98 with a P233 CPU. XP will go - but it will be significantly slower! | johnd (85) | |
2006-04-27 11:45:00 | I must confess I didn't look at the other specs :P The memory stood out to me and I posted that. | Neongreen (6358) | |
2006-04-28 05:14:00 | i have a HP Brio in my closet - it has a PII 233, 128mb of ram and a 8gb HDD and i have windows XP Pro SP2 running on it and it is good for desktop progs e.c.t and it was still nice and responsive with 5 or so browser windows open but thats about all it could do. | MAC_H8ER (5897) | |
2006-04-28 05:31:00 | I've got better specs than Jayal so I expect the upgrade performance would be Ok, and I;ve been thinking of upgrading for a while but my related question is: to upgrade from 98SE to XP do I have to completely uninstall 98 or can I simply install XP over my existing OS?. If not is it a tricky operation as I don't want to lose all my existing programmes and files. | willbry (1555) | |
2006-04-28 05:37:00 | In theory you can install XP over a 98 installation. However, there are always a few bugs around which will gaurantee something will not work. There is also the question of whether the programs currently on the 98 installation will work on XP at all. :2cents:

2006-04-28 05:45:00 | Hi jayal. I did that about three years ago. Upgraded 98SE to XP Pro. As you start the process, the system will advise you of any existing programmes or hardware that it thinks will not run under XP. For example, it rejected my old scanner and I could not get new drivers so had to buy a new one. It told me that it could not take Works 4.5 in the upgrade. I backed up all the 4.5 material. However, I found that once XP was loaded and running well I could reload Works 4.5 and use XP's compatibility procedure to make it run as though on 98. (I needed/liked the old database in 4.5.) I have loaded several old programmes including games under the compatibility umbrella. Well worth the minimum effort it took me. | Scouse (83) | |

So what if MS wants to try and scare you into forking over more money. All you need is: Antivirus Firewall Two or more antispyware MS never "supported" anything anyway - just issued a few ugly patches to try and plug the endless leaks in their O/S.... |
