450628 2006-04-29 12:43:00 Hi upon installing winxp SP2 I think my LAN has not been working . It says, limited or no connectivity .

I have download that #2040 KB download off MS site to no avail . I also ran that registry fix up file . I have also tried, winsockxpfix . exe file or such to no assistance . I also tried to use manual IP address to no help .

Both my PC and laptop (win2k) was on manual IP .

When the PC boots into win2k and its fine with the laptop .
Apart from the LAN the computer is fine . Dialup works, jus that I cannot share my hard drives around .

Tried disabling firewall . Connection is via cross over cable .

Thanks for any assistance .

450629 2006-04-29 12:52:00 Try checking the cable, swap it for another and see if its working there. bob_doe_nz (92)
450630 2006-04-29 20:50:00 And how are you trying to share a folder??

Have u created a folder and shared it??

You dont use / type in the ip addresses to share a folder .

What other firewalls, besides XP's are installed on them?

What ip addresses are you using on them? 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 etc??

I would also make sure the workgroup name hasnt been changed on any of them .

450631 2006-04-29 21:18:00 Are you using the correct cable (crossover for computer to computer, patch for computer to switch)? Greven (91)
450632 2006-04-29 21:27:00 Make sure both computers are on the same 'workgroup', i.e. network name. pcuser42 (130)
450633 2006-04-29 22:12:00 I have found in several cases ,with the same symtoms as you describe, changing the Auto Negotiate to 100 full duplex in the properties of the NIC also cured this problem. This forces the network card to run at 100mb therefore not allowing it to auto negotiate giving (sometimes) that message "limited or no network connectivty" beama (111)
450634 2006-04-30 00:08:00 Crossover cable is being used. Works fine on when the PC boots into win2k with the laptop on win2k. This cable worked before SP2 was installed.

Both computer is logged in with admin rights, all the HDD and optical drives are shared, this is the whole drive (not just folders), full write and read access is made avail.

WinXP firewall is not in use, I have Zonealarm on both but have disabled both of those to no avail.

The workgroup is the same as "HOME" on both computers.

The IP addresses, is,
192.168.0.3
Submask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.2

Preferred dns server, 203.12.160.36
alternatate dns server, 203.12.160.37

On the PC it is the same except the numbers at the end is altered, for example
IP address would be 192.168.0.2
Submask the same 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.2
Preferred dns server 203.12.160.35
Alternate dns server 203.12.160.36

All HDD and CD/DVD drives are shared, there is a hand icon under the drive icon under my computer. Its just that they can't be accessed via via the network by the other computer.

Via PC's winxp network properties, I tried to use fix (repair) the limited or no connectivity but it says, can't do and please contact your network administrator. No error # number was given thou. This icon only comes up when the network plug is plugged into the PC, then the icon spins around saying somethign like trying to obtain ip address .. and eventually it gives up and says this error.

450635 2006-04-30 00:47:00 Well, I wouldnt share every folder, if all of these are on the net for starters .

You're asking for trouble .

What are the preferred dns server ips you've typed in?? They should be for your ISP .

Default gateway for the networked pc should be 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 not 192 . 168 . 0 . 2

If u want the networked pc to get on the net .

Change both to MSHOME for the workgroup name

450636 2006-04-30 04:26:00 Your settings are fine. Doesn't matter what your workgroup name is as long as they are the same. Nothing wrong with the IP's either. I agree sharing the whole HD isn't the best but will have nothing to do with your problem. I would try and change the primary DNS on 192.68.0.3 to 192.168.0.2 but still shouldn't matter. I always put a DNS setting in on the client but many have said you don't need it. What service pack is on the Win2K laptop? So all goes well when you boot the PC with Win2K but not when you boot to XP?? berryb (99)
450637 2006-04-30 06:05:00 What service pack is on the Win2K laptop? So all goes well when you boot the PC with Win2K but not when you boot to XP??

Yes.

Win2k is SP4. PC on win2k is no SP. WinXP on PC is SP2.

I do not have windows sharing enabled for PPP (Intenet) for my case dialup.

I have uninstalled SP2 on PC and Lan immediately worked. Then I tried to reinstall sp2 but then failed again, uninstalled it then it gave me error 711, 5, 1068. Its due for a format now, without sp's.
