| 450597 | 2006-04-29 10:26:00 | i'm pretty lost when it comes to cpu stuff.. i think it's time to clarify some things so..the questions for the luvly ppl of PressF1: AMD FX-60 is a dual core cpu it runs at 2.8GHz/core so..does that mean it adds up to 5.6GHz when you fully utilize both cores? the intel coreduo cpus.. say if a notebook has a duocore cpu at 1GHz is that both cpu add up to 1GHz (ie 500Mhz/core) or do they add up to 2GHz if you fully utilize the cpu? then there's the mac mini's Mac mini 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo Mac mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo so..would the core duo end up with 3.32GHz in total? yea..have a feeling these simple addition doesn't work like this.. just need a idea on how to compare comps when only provided with name of cpu and its clockspeed.. |

| 450598 | 2006-04-29 10:45:00 | Unfortunately not. Basically, an FX-60 has two 2.8Ghz processors on the same die. If you multi-task lots, ie having multiple programmes/applications working concurrently, then the two cores will be utilised effectively. In general, a dual core processor will make your overall computeing experince better and faster. However, in games, some take advantage of dual cores, some don't. If the game is multi-threaded, then it will spread the load across the two cores, if the game isn't multi-threaded (ie single-threaded), then it will load up only one core. Be careful when comparing the speed of the processors - AMD Athlon 64, FX, X2 and Opteron do more 'work' per clock, and are more efficient, thus don't have such high clocks compared to Intels 'Netburst' processors (Celeron D, Pentium 4 and Pentium D) which do less work per clock and thus need high Ghz to compete with AMD (AMD is faster for desktops). Intel is faster in the mobile space with the Core Duo, as AMD does not have a dual core processor currently for laptops. A Core Duo at 1.66Ghz is roughly equal to around a 3Ghz Pentium D 930. So simply - Dual core is two individual cores on the same die. ie, Core Duo T2300 is 2x1.66Ghz BUT NOT 3.32Ghz total. You will never see a 100% increase of dual core vs single core. |

| 450599 | 2006-04-29 11:20:00 | so..duo core can multitask better is it? coz like..2 single threaded program can use diff core but if a single program that is very cpu intensive (games in ur eg) and can't multi-thread..then it'll only be able to use one of the core at a time leaving the other one..well..idle so the mac mini that are core solo do those kinda lack the better multitask ability of their core duo twin? this is kinda OT from my original post.. with the more work per cycle thing would that also mean that a Intel Pentium M work faster than a Intel Celeron M even when they have the same clock speed thanx for clearing a few things up though.. was getting confused when i saw new notebook specs and clock speed seem to be going down instead of up i knew that clock speed isn't the only thing you look at but now with all this extra names and all sorts of cpu i'm just getting lost |

| 450600 | 2006-04-30 04:35:00 | A Core Duo will out-perform a Core Solo in multi-threaded applications, and probably would seam faster in Windows. In games, patches are beng made that make use of the second core, but the benifits are not as great as say video encoding which is multi-threaded. The Celeron M and Pentium M are almost identical, except for the power saving features and more cache in the Pentium M. A Pentium M would be ever so slightly faster than a Celeron M, but nothing you would actually notice, but battery life is greatly extended when Intel Enhanced Speedstep Tech is enabled. (A Celeron M is based on the same architecture as Pentium M and is basically a crippled version of the Pentium M.) So if you are considoring a Mac Mini, the 1.66Ghz Core Duo will be faster than a 1.5Ghz Core Solo, but, there are guides out there where you can buy your own Core Duo and insert that into the Mac Mini, replacing the Core Solo (say good-bye to warrenty though). |
