450962 2006-05-01 01:02:00 I havn't brought a monitor in years and I have no idea what to look for.

There are plently of them on pricespy but the specs are confusing.

All I do know is this.
My vid card has 2x DVI outputs so I want a DVI monitor
I play a lot of games, and always buy new games with new tech
19"
Prefer under $500
Pixel warranty

I have no idea what are the best brands or what I should be looking for, any help appreciated.

450963 2006-05-01 09:12:00 If you're into gaming or movies, the Viewsonic VX922 is worth looking at (2ms response times), although it's a bit pricier than $500.

450964 2006-05-01 09:25:00 I'm using Viewsonic VA702 17" for $380 last year. I dont have a clue if i have a warranty but fingers crossed i wont need to! XD (im a dumbo) anyways. I have 8ms response timer and play hardcore games. i do not notice any monitor lag. so you dont have to settle for 2ms. 4-8 should be just fine also. and you will want to know that having an LCD monitor for games is not always a good idea becase they look awful at lower resolutions other than their native (1280x1024, varies) omg did i just say something helpful!? wow im cool! oh yeah! lcd monitors come with auto image adjust. you'll love it! saves you so much time fixing the width and heights and stuff when u play new games etc! and make sure u get one with alot of colour! COLOUR BABY YEA!!! and that anti glare finish on the screen. u can mount them to the wall so yea.i think cheimei is the cheapest brand. but i heard they have some problems but also good. one major problem with most lcds is flickering on morie patterns. for example the background on this website: http://www.christiananswers.net/ jamesyboi (6579)

This post is off topic .

This ( . pp . co . nz/ProductsI . php?pp_id=FP00300" target="_blank">www . pp . co . nz) monitor has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024, does that mean games run at 1024 x 768 will look crappy on it?

450966 2006-05-01 11:32:00 Yes.

On an LCD each pixel is a hardware pixel, its not "scalable" as a CRT is.
It's either ON or OFF.

A 1280 x 1024 scaled down to 1024 x 768 has to compromise, staright lines will have some in that row ON and some OFF, giving fuzzy edges. You cannot have a pixel "half ON" or "half OFF" They are wickedly sharp at their native resolution. Can be horrible at lower resolutions.

Also be aware there is often a direct trade-off with fast response times also having a reduced viewing angle, slower response times have a wider viewing angle. Most modern screens have adequate response times for gaming, but the resolution may not be suited.

450967 2006-05-01 11:43:00 sigh..lucky u guys have 1280x1024 native resolution..
i'm stuck on 1024x768 native so i wont' have problem playing games with low resolution..
but then again why would i want to play game on this lcd which has a response time of 50ms..

..now enough moaning..back to answering your post
i think it would be a good idea to go to a shop and see several screens on display and look at their colours
i notice how mine is really dull when it comes to colours..even my printer gives better result
i think Viewsonic is a good brand to buy even though i never had a viewsonic monitor
but i've notice how those viewsonic monitors just looks better when put alongside other monitors of other brands

Ahh . . .

Well dash, darn and dang . I'll either have to upgrade my CPU / GPU when I go LCD, or just put up with it for a while .

Or is there a compromise?

450970 2006-05-01 12:52:00 Set the game to run 1200X1024

that will tell you if you need a better graphics card

I spoke to a guy at work about this one and it looks like I will grab it.
I can get it for about $575 including GST cause the company has a discount with the supplier of this monitor.

Thanks for all the advice.
