450094 2006-04-27 21:16:00 Hey People :)

I turned on the machine this morning and it prompted a check disk for my 'Storage' partition, anyway the thing is while I was watching it I saw it say deleting and then a file name, I then got into windows and found it HAD deleted over half of my music!!! though I was lucky because I was able to recover it using a partition explorer.

Why did it do this???

I now advise watching it carefully :badpc:

Thanks :)

450095 2006-04-27 23:59:00 There's usually a good reason why ChkDsk/Scan Disk is deleting files, from most likely to least likely:

* the file system is corrupted because of improper shutdown / failing drive (most likely)
* bad hard drive Windows driver / problem with write caching.
* bad RAM (try http://www.memtest.org)
* some form of nasty has corrupted ChkDsk
* bad RAID configuration / RAID hardware (least likely)

Not running ChkDsk is not really an option. It's sort of like driving a car without every doing a tune-up; eventually it bites you in the bum.

450096 2006-04-28 00:12:00 The last time it was shutdown it was fine, the drive is a replacement and would only be not even 3 months old...

How can RAM affect it? :illogical last time I tested the RAM it was fine (it has been the suspect of other problems, which turned out to be Windows... :badpc: )

It is only an IDE, no RAID.

Yeah, I normally do it once a month (try to anyway... :D )

Just done Defraging on all drives and that has taken 3 hours :horrified

450097 2006-04-28 01:20:00 Have you checked the event log ? gcarmich (10068)
450098 2006-04-28 02:00:00 Bad RAM is highly unlikely to affect a check disk, but it's not impossible .

Basically the NTFS table gets read into RAM during the check disk; it's concievable, but again unlikely .

I guess you know about the writing caching check box:

Drive . . . properties
"Policy" tab
"Enable write caching on the disk"

gcarmich tip about the event viewer is a good idea .

Are you clocking that baby? :D Be careful with PCI, PATA/SATA bus speeds. Some will appear to work okay, but actually could be writing corrupted data to the disk/partition..

It might be possible... ;) but the PCI bus, is that not what the PATA/SATA bus speeds are running at because the speed does not change according to the clockgen for nf4 which came with the mobo...
