451548 2006-05-02 21:07:00 Hi,
I recently deleted a WMV (Windows Media Video) file of my computer that I later realised I actually needed. It's not in the recycle bin (first place I checked) I have tried a few programs for recovering the data but but I either need to buy them or they just dont't seem to of found the file. Whether this is due to them only recognising certain formats, I don't know. If you could spare some advice on what I should do or recommend a recovery program that recognises WMV formats I would be very gratefull. Thanks.

451550 2006-05-02 21:41:00 Yeh I've tried restoration but I don't think it recognises WMV File's. I told it to just scan the whole Hard-drive but it didn't even come up with any of the other WMV files I deleted ages ago. Tracer-Bullet (10096)
451551 2006-05-02 22:35:00 just tried it myself out of curiosity and you can set it to scan for wmv files only very simply......it worked for me drcspy (146)
451552 2006-05-02 22:36:00 try this one:

pci_us_smartrecovery
drcspy (146)
451553 2006-05-02 23:35:00 or PCI FileRecovery, the Smart recovery version is aimed more at image files. I've found files using FileRecovery after format and reinstallation of the OS. The thing to remeber is to use the PC as little as possible, if you can manage it, run the recovery utility from a CD rather than starting up Windows and running from there. Murray P (44)
451554 2006-05-03 03:31:00 Unless I've missed something over the years, a WMV file is no different from any other file, as far as NTFS is concerned.

As Murray P alludes, if you deleted a file from the C drive
- Don't fire up the same PC, and start downloading to the C drive
- Don't install new undelete utility to the C drive

Assuming you've been naughty and not backed up, the best thing you can do when you delete a file is to immediately shut down and boot from a utility CD
