452187 2006-05-04 19:34:00 Windows wants me to get an update for an ethernet card that I don't have...any ideas?

Maybe the company changed hands...huh?

I don't recognize this update or the name of the card:

10/100Mbps PCMCIA 32-bit CardBus Ethernet Card with XpressPort
TE100-PCBUSR

I am actually running an EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card by Linksys.

452188 2006-05-04 19:38:00 Joe in my experance Microsoft drivers are unreliable at best, at least from the update site anyway.

DONT DO IT.

452190 2006-05-04 21:46:00 I agree about their updates (M$), but I still wonder where they got that info...I ran Belarc just to see and I still get a Linksys NIC...Hmmmmmmmm SurferJoe46 (51)
452191 2006-05-04 22:24:00 MS did this to me as well a year or so back (though in my case my Linksys adapter was accurately identified).

I downloaded the MS sourced 'update' and installed it, and it stuffed up the whole thing. Reverted to the Linksys driver, and it was fine.

Some time later I inadvertently did the same thing, with the same results. It was at that point I think that I learned that you can tell MS not to display certain updates... Since then, there have been no problems.

A similar thing has happened to me with a MS 'update' for an HP printer driver. Once again, it stuffed the whole setup. It was at that point that I learned to never accept MS updates for other companies' products.

I am a slow learner.

John, leaving aside the notion that you're a slow learner, for the moment at least, I am of the opinion that you don't accept any updates/patches from MS without review. I let the Windows Update page do it's thing, review the KB on the files then download each individually and install. It involves a little more hassle, but I've caught many that were totally irrellevant to my system and some that were already installed (and no, the files on offer weren't updates of the original patches).

The one problem with this approach, is that in a lot of cases, MS only give vague information at best as to what they are fixing and why, so if you're a nosey type, you can spend some time on the thrilling hunt for coherent information.

One other gripe with Windows Update, I use W2k, many of the files purported to be for W2k, are in fact XP only files. No doubt they would probably work just fine (many used to be XP/W2k compatible), but it seems to me that MS has rigged them to throw a hissy fit on W2k, even though the update is stated as required. What happens to these files if you use the automated process, god and MS only knows, it's beyond my ability to glean.

Oh, and is pctek correct. The only time I have installed an MS offered driver, was for a Realtek NIC, which surprised me a little because I thought it had the latest drivers. Yep, it stuffed up and I treverted to the previous driver, but since then this update shows up at WU and does so for another PC here albeit for a different model of card. Morons.

452195 2006-05-05 03:55:00 Boy.... I wish I knew what you guys were on about. I never been prompted by MS for an updated driver, nor any other sort of update. The only things I've ever gotten from MS's website are a small handful of important security updates - why would anyone need anything else from there?

[me happy in XP Pro SP1 land]

452196 2006-05-05 03:59:00 Look here, Joe . If Microsoft say you have this card, you have that card .

Their software has determined that as a FACT . It is well known that MS software is absolutely error-free . Just read the End User Licence Agreement if you doubt that .
