452005 2006-05-04 06:58:00 Hi all,
like a number on this forum, i too fail to get the alleged speeds of 3.5mb i am currently subscripted too, and havent really moved from the 2mb bandwidth i had before April. While the thought of paying for a service and receiving only 75% of it, is annoying, 2mb is really quite sufficent for your average user, if the pings were ok.
The upload speed of course needs to be amended, but IMHO, do we really need to be able to download dvd's in an hour? or another way, most patches, demo, songs etc are quick enough to download. gaming with good pings are great on current broadband. So for joe bloggs, i really cant see an issue

Only businesses i think could really benefit from a faster service like adsl2.

what do you guys think?

edit, sorry, wrong forum!, please move mod!

452006 2006-05-04 07:59:00 I agree. But I can't even get 2Mbps now, I get between 200 and the best so far - 958. It averages 400.
Too many greedy software thieves and online gamers thinks they need maximum speed and unlimited data. Mostly the thieves in my opinion.
Save it for the people who really need it.

The average consumer has little need for speeds faster than 2MBit. However, without ADSL2, it is impossible to offer next generation services such as digital cable etc. :) maccrazy (6741)
452008 2006-05-04 08:55:00 I also have not been upgraded and I am not worried, the only thing that the speed increasse will do is make me say bye bye to the cap faster... :(

It is NOT the DL speeds that need looking at but the upload speeds, and you are right, 2MB is pleanty for the average user

452009 2006-05-04 10:49:00 Unfortunately its the marketing that's having an effect on speed as well .

Telecom have been trying to cram as many users online with as many carrots as they can . They have done little to accommodate the growth of slightly-faster-than-dialup-band through their marketing, and now the Nets got more users than it can handle . Again . Its just like the introduction of 0867 all over again .

The NZ government is one I've always described as well meaning, but inept . Past Labour governments always were, and future Labour governments always will be . Every once in a while, one individual shows flair, and initiative, and suddenly we have this wonderful announcement that the lines that one such well meaning but inept Labour Government passed into Telecom's hands wants to wrest them back out again .
Cunliffe needs to be careful though, Labour ministers who show initiative have a nasty habit of being dispatched by other Labour ministers .

Anyway, this sidegrade to 'faster/cheaper' internet for me at least is about 56kbs slower than what I had last month, not 10x faster .

452010 2006-05-05 07:08:00 I'm getting 3592kbps on that test site. I'm very happy with my upgrade from 256. wotz (335)

And all the other ISPs russhing to offer 7Mbps and so on soon? Thats not trying to attract more customers? Telecom knew it would cause a problem and did it anyway due to the clamour for it. That from the horses mouth...

452012 2006-05-05 11:32:00 i have to admit that i probably don't need the full 3.5mb speed..which i never get anywayz
but right now when it's after around 4pm my internet just gets too slow
it feels like i'm going back to 256 or sometimes even slower around 9-10pm
and that's when i'm actually home and can use my internet..so..

yea..so gonna call quicksilver and ask about that..
