451924 2006-05-04 02:02:00 Hello, my computers been running fine until last night when I was asked if as part of Windows Update whether I would let them check if I have a legal version of Windows. I hit yes go ahead, and then when my Sygate Firewall asked if I would allow this I suddenly got scared and hit no. My computer froze completely and I had to reboot.

I have since had to reboot dozens of times because as soon as it reboots the Windows update pops up, I hit Yes and Yes and nothing. Sometimes it doesnt pop up but after 5 minutes (if that) it locks up again.

I have tried system restore a few times and it works good for about a half hour, but eventually the Update pop up appears and it freezes.

This is the fourth system restore I have tried, I have turned off Auto update whilst I was in safe mode, and so far so good (half hour and no probs!). It does however mean I cannot update my windows - if indeed this time it works anyway.

I have virus and spyware checked and its come up clean.

Heres my HJT report if its any use, I would really appreciate any help!

Ta,
Caleb

451925 2006-05-04 02:14:00 Go into your Sygate Firewall settings and allow Windows Update (most likely wuauclt.exe) to run and access the net. Antmannz (6583)
451926 2006-05-04 02:24:00 I can't find Windows Update in Sygate. Is it the Windows Installer (msiexec.exe)? Or do I need to turn on Automatic Updates again first? Buff_K (691)
451927 2006-05-04 02:29:00 You will need to turn on Automatic Updates. It's unlikely to be msiexec.exe, but you never know. Antmannz (6583)
451928 2006-05-04 02:41:00 Boot into safe mode, run HJT again, tick these entries and tick fix checked.

451929 2006-05-04 03:00:00 LiveUpdate is part of the Norton/Symantec product family, used to update virus signatures etc. Antmannz (6583)
451930 2006-05-04 03:04:00 Actually I think this particular LiveUpdate is for my DVD drive to update the firmware, but I could not find it on my second Hijack this scan interestingly.

Thanks for you help guys, I'll see if it works.

451931 2006-05-04 03:09:00 Liveupdate for Symantec doesnt usually start on bootup .

Its usually configured thru the Control Panel .

Thats possible, if the dvd is a BTC dvd .
