451865 2006-05-03 22:00:00 Hey,

Firefox keeps downloading updates for their browser, like the new version etc. Is there any way I can disable this feature, and download it myself? Because every single time firefox downloads it, the automatic setup fails and it tells me to restart firefox and try again. I cannot avoid this and open firefox to surf the internet, or to download the new version etc, leading me to use Internet Explorer (ugh).

This is the 2nd time it's happened in just under two weeks, and it has happened before that as well.

I'm downloading the newer version of Mozilla at the moment and hopefully that will be no more updates for next few months!

So, hope there is a way to stop firefox downloading the updates itself?

451866 2006-05-03 22:10:00 grrr, just downloaded firefox, installed it and it did not work. So uninstalled it, restarted my computer and installed it again, now it is saying the same thing that it was when it tried to install firefox's automatic update: "Software Update Failed: One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure that all other applications are closed and that you have permission to modify files, and then restart Firefox to try again".

what next? I'm fed up with getting the same problems over and over again!

451868 2006-05-03 22:22:00 It's in Tools->Options->Advanced->Update Safari (3993)
451869 2006-05-03 22:26:00 Tools / Options / Advanced tab / Updates tab.

Untick the updates you dont want done automatically.
Hope that helps

451871 2006-06-06 13:51:00 I had the same problem, and I found the solution:
** Disable all exentions **

For those of you who are frustrated by the endless loop, follow these steps.
1) When the dialog box says "One or more files cannot be updated", place your mouse on the taskbar and click right-mouse button. Select "Task Manager"
2) On the processes tab, locate "Firefox.exe". Select and click "End process"
3) Now, open explorer and locate "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updates\0" and delete the contents of this folder.
4) Now, you can start Firefox as normal.
5) Go to tools>extensions and disable all extensions (don't uninstall, this is not necessary)
6) Restart Firefox and go to help>check for updates
(6a. If it says "apply updates" (or a similar text) in the help menu, do the following: go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox and locate active-update.xml. Open this file with notepad. Delete the content of this file and save it, now proceed with step 6)
7) The update will be downloaded and applied. Enable all your extensions when the program is updated.

I think the problem occurs when some extensions (I don't know which) keep their files "read only". By disabling the extensions temporarily, the update can be applied.

Good luck.

451872 2007-03-04 15:19:00 I thought the answer I posted above was correct. I'm afraid it was not the real solution to my problem. The real solution I found was here: www.richarddavies.us

It was in my case the program 'Aqua Dock' that prevented Firefox to update correctly. Temporarily closing this program was the solution.
