I have a $1000 [maybe stretch to $1100] to spend on a new puter (don't need monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers)
What can I expect to get for this money. Confused about whether to go Intel, AMD,
Anything I should avoid like the plague?
Wants: Good quality graphics card, sound card, DVD burner
Would appreciate some system recommendations

The old Packard Bell's gonna bite the dust, but to a good home. Its been a trusty reliable companion (if a hunk of metal can be a companion LOL)

Thanks in advance

P/S: Kudos to the Govt for having the guts to force Telecom into unbundling :stare:

451817 2006-05-03 12:33:00 Suggest buy a used case with power supply then you can splash out reasonably well on hard drive, motherboard and vid and sound cards. Greg (193)
451818 2006-05-03 13:22:00 Hi Baldy, long time no see. How are you?. Maryann has one built by Metla, here in Wanganui. Doesn't help you much, but she is more than happy with it. PJ Poppa John (284)
451819 2006-05-03 20:51:00 Hey - we got our computer from a shop in christchurch (computerbarn or something) for $600 - excluding monitor, keyboard, etc.
maybe you would mant something more powerful that our one - it is just a standard type. But still, you could buy extras to add.

For gaming or not?
ASUS motherboard, AMD CPU, Liteon or Pioneer or ASUS DVD.
Graphics card - whatever except Pxelview. What specs depends on the gaming question.
Avoid cheap dodgy shops.

Yes. Anything by HP/Compaq. Probably Dell too.

You'd get a good second hand machine for that sort of money. Have a look through "Trade ME"

451822 2006-05-03 22:26:00 Baldy, have a look here (www.pbtech.co.nz)
for PB Technology's upgrade box. At $843 incl GST, you can add another 512 Mb RAM to make it 1 G RAM total. You might even be able to afford to upgrade the video card if you need it for gaming.

Have had a look at PTTech website, but not sure I can buy direct from them as they are wholesalers?

451824 2006-05-04 23:31:00 They're wholesalers as well as retailers. Greg (193)

They are retailers who resell a few products to other smaller retailers. Not really wholesalers as such.
